Grab vs a private driver in Hoi An: when each one wins

We sell the private car, so here is the case for the app: for a lot of trips Grab is cheaper, faster and the obvious answer. Here's where the line falls.

The short version
  • Grab works well in Hoi An and Da Nang and is the right choice for single hops — a beach run is $3–5 and arrives in minutes.
  • It fails predictably in three places: return trips from rural sites, the Old Town walking zone in the evening, and anywhere your data connection doesn't reach.
  • Break-even is roughly three stops: below that use the app, above it a $89 day hire is cheaper and much faster.

We hire out private cars, so treat this as a comparison written by an interested party — but an interested party who would rather you use Grab and be happy than book a day you didn't need.

Does Grab work in Hoi An?

Yes. Grab covers Hội An and Đà Nẵng properly, with both cars (GrabCar) and motorbikes (GrabBike). Xanh SM, the electric taxi service, is a solid second app and often has shorter waits. Prices are fixed in the app before you accept, which removes the negotiation entirely.

Typical 2026 fares. Surge applies in rain, which in October and November is most afternoons.

The three places it breaks

  1. 1
The return leg from rural sites

Getting to Mỹ Sơn is easy. Getting back at 11am from a car park with no waiting drivers is not. Drivers who do agree will quote a waiting fee that lands close to a half-day rate anyway.

  2. 2
The Old Town in the evening

The centre is closed to vehicles for much of the evening. Grab drivers can't reach a pin inside the zone, and pickup on the ring road at 9pm on a Saturday is a scrum of identical scooters.

  3. 3
    No data, no car

Grab needs a working connection to book. On arrival day, in a rural lane, or when your eSIM lapses, the app is simply not available — and that is exactly when you're least able to improvise.

Where the line falls

The maths is not really about fares — it is about waiting. Every Grab leg costs you five to fifteen minutes of standing outside, plus the cognitive load of rebooking. Two legs is nothing. Five legs is an hour of your day and the reason people go back to the hotel early.

Your dayGrab, stackedPrivate car ($89 sedan)Winner

Marble Mountains + Da Nang + Son Tra + dinner$35–50 + 4 waits$89Car

So: one or two stops, use the app and keep the money. Three or more, or any itinerary where a return car is not guaranteed, hire the car. That is the entire decision.

What the app can't do at all

  • Wait at arrivals with your name on a sign while your flight is three hours late.
  • Hold your bags while you eat lunch, then meet you two villages later.
  • Tell you which of two cao lầu places is the one that changed hands.
  • Speak enough English to change the plan at 2pm because it started raining.
  • Be the same person tomorrow, who already knows you wanted the air conditioning turned down.

None of that matters for a beach run. All of it matters on a week-long trip with a family. Book accordingly, and don't let anyone — including us — talk you into a car you'd only use twice.

Questions people ask us

Does Grab work in Hoi An?
Yes, both GrabCar and GrabBike operate in Hội An and Đà Nẵng, with fixed in-app pricing. Xanh SM is a good alternative app with a mostly electric fleet.
Is Grab cheaper than a private driver in Hoi An?
For one or two trips a day, yes — comfortably. From about three stops, or for any trip where you'd struggle to find a return car, the $89 day rate usually costs less once waiting fees and dead time are counted.
Can I get a Grab back from My Son or Ba Na Hills?
Often not. There are few drivers waiting at either, and one who does accept will typically want a waiting fee that approaches a half-day rate. For those two trips a pre-booked car is the practical choice.
Do I need a Vietnamese SIM to use Grab?
You need working mobile data. An eSIM bought before you fly is the easiest option; a local SIM at the airport works too. You can't book on wifi alone once you leave the building.
Is Grab safe in Vietnam?
Yes. Fares are fixed in advance, the driver and plate are shown before pickup, and the ride is tracked in the app. It removes almost all the friction people worry about with taxis.
