Thanh Ha Pottery Village 2026: The 35,000 VND Ticket That Pays a Potter's Wage

Seven years ago today — 27 August 2019 — the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism signed nghề gốm Thanh Hà onto the national list of intangible cultural heritage. It is a strange thing to list, because what got listed is not an object but a way of doing something: clay dug from the river, shaped by hand or on a foot-turned wheel, no mould, no glaze, fired in a wood kiln. VietnamPlus described the method as "gần như độc nhất" — very nearly unique — in the country.

We pass the turn to it perhaps ten times a week, going out to Mỹ Sơn and back. Most guests have never heard of it, and the ones who ask usually ask at the wrong hour and expect a museum. It is not a museum. It is 320 households, of which thirty-two still make pottery.

What does the 35,000 VND ticket actually buy?

35,000 VND for an adult, 15,000 VND for a child — about 1.35 USD — bought at the gate, not in town. It is a separate ticket from the Old Town one, which surprises most people at the gate. Included in the price is one small terracotta piece to take away, usually a con thổi: a clay whistle, one of the twelve zodiac animals, with holes underneath that sound when you blow across them. They are a late-1990s invention, and they are now what half the village makes.

The part worth knowing is where the money goes. Per VOV's reporting, the whole of the ticket revenue is spent inside the village — on the landscape, on rebuilding the river embankment, and on a monthly payment to the people still working clay. About 36 households and 60 workers are on that list, graded: A for a master artisan, around 6 million VND a month; B for a skilled hand, around 4.2 million; C for an apprentice, around 3 million. In a busy month it can reach 5 to 6 million a head. In a slow one it drops back near 3 million.

That is unusual enough to say plainly: your entry fee is not a gate charge on a heritage site, it is a wage for a craft that would otherwise not survive the century. The economics followed — village revenue from pottery and tourism went from just over 2 billion VND in 2017 to 17 billion in 2018 and 24.3 billion in 2019. In 2025 the village took more than 251,000 visitors, over 224,000 of them foreign, and on 31 December it was named Điểm du lịch cộng đồng tốt nhất — best community tourism destination — at the Vietnam Tourism Awards.

How far is it, and what does the drive look like?

Thanh Hà sits in tổ dân phố Nam Diêu, phường Hội An Tây, on the left bank of a branch of the Thu Bồn. Since the reorganisation of 1 July 2025 that address is Đà Nẵng, not Quảng Nam — worth knowing if you are typing it into a phone.

• From Hội An Old Town: about 3 km, eight to ten minutes. Out Hùng Vương until the river shows on your left, along Duy Tân for roughly a kilometre, then left at Phạm Phán.
• From An Bàng beach: about 7 km, fifteen minutes.
• From Đà Nẵng airport: around 30 km, 40 to 45 minutes.
• From Mỹ Sơn: it is on the way home. This is the point most itineraries miss.

The drop-off reality is simple: the car stops at the gate. The lanes inside are the width of a handcart and no vehicle follows you in. That is also why the place stays quiet — coaches physically cannot get down them, so what fills the village mid-morning is people on foot and on bicycles, not a car park emptying at once. The walk is flat, shaded in patches, about a kilometre if you loop it properly past the kilns and the miếu.

What hour should you arrive?

Doors are open roughly 08:00 to 17:30. The two hours that matter are 08:00 to 10:00 and after 15:30. Between eleven and three the wheels stop, the workshops go quiet and you are walking a hot sand lane looking at stacked pots.

To make the drive work: leave the Old Town at 07:45 for a nine o'clock village, or fold it into the return from Mỹ Sơn, where your driver is already coming down the west side of town around 10:30. Forty-five minutes to an hour covers the village at a real pace. Two to three hours if you are throwing your own pot, which several households teach in their own front rooms, or if you are also doing Công viên Đất nung Thanh Hà next door — the private terracotta park built by the architect Nguyễn Văn Nguyên, roughly 08:30 to 17:30, separate ticket.

What are you actually watching?

Five households still work in the fully traditional way. Thirteen make the whistles. The rest produce decorative ware. Between them there are four traditional kilns of the old lò úp and lò bầu types, four open kilns for decorative pieces, and five for the whistles. Seventy years ago the same hamlet held some fifty pottery households, thirty to forty throwing wheels, eight kilns and two to three hundred workers. The gap between those two counts is the reason the wage list exists.

The technique to watch is the wheel: one person turning it while a second shapes the clay, no mould in sight, nothing glazed at any stage. Thanh Hà pottery is the colour it comes out of the fire — red, brown, ash-grey, decided by where the piece sat in the kiln. If a stall is selling you something shiny, it did not come from here.

Can you now arrive by river?

Yes, and it is new. The bến du lịch làng gốm Thanh Hà opened on 1 September 2025 at Km1+600 on a branch of the Thu Bồn — a grade-3 river port cleared for boats drawing 0.56 m with up to 40 passengers. Tourist boats were allowed to dock from 29 August 2025, and the pier handled close to 60,000 visitors in its first three months.

For a day it opens a good shape: car out, boat back, or the reverse. Private boats from Bạch Đằng in the Old Town run on a negotiated price, generally 100,000 to 150,000 VND per person. Hold the water level loosely — the pier is the first thing to close when the river rises, and the road is the second.

What does flood season do to Thanh Hà?

It is the low ground, and it goes under. In late October 2025 the historic flood submerged the entire village, ruined stockpiled clay and stopped the kilns; on 29 October relief crossed the floodwater to a village that had been cut off for two days. By Tết the kilns were red again.

Which is the honest answer for October and November: go, but keep the morning movable. The version you see three days after rain — everything washed, the lanes dark, smoke back over the kilns — is better than anything August offers. Your driver watches the Thu Bồn level long before you do, and will say so.

And the festival?

Lễ hội giỗ Tổ nghề gốm Thanh Hà falls on the ninth and tenth days of the seventh lunar month — in 2026, 21 and 22 August, so this year's has just passed. It begins early with a procession from miếu Lùm Bà Dàng to miếu Nam Diêu, then incense and the rites for the founders who came south from Thanh Hóa and Nghệ An in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The tenth-day ceremony is doubled: thanks to the ancestors, and the closing of the kilns.
