Tam Thanh Mural Village 2026: The Coast Road 57 km South, and the Monument 7 km Up the Hill
Làng bích họa Tam Thanh is a working fishing village on the Quảng Nam coast whose walls have been painted since June 2016, repainted in 2020, 2023 and 2024, and fronted by a road lined with hundreds of painted thuyền thúng. It is 57 km south of Hội An, there is no gate, and 7 km away on núi Cấm stands the largest monument in Vietnam. Here is how the two fit one driving day.

Most of what we drive south of Hội An is somebody catching a flight out of Chu Lai. The coast road keeps going past Bình Minh, and after an hour of almost empty tarmac it reaches a fishing village where the walls are painted. Nobody books it. You can walk it for an hour and see no other car, and seven kilometres away stands a monument the size of a hillside that almost no foreign visitor has heard of.
Where is Làng bích họa Tam Thanh, and what changed on the map?
Behind bãi biển Tam Thanh, about 11 to 12 km east of the old Tam Kỳ centre along đường Duy Tân. The painted stretch is usually given as thôn Trung Thanh, though newer listings name neighbouring hamlets too; in practice it is a run of lanes between the road and the dunes.
The paperwork moved without the village moving. Under Nghị quyết 1659/NQ-UBTVQH15, from 1 July 2025 phường An Phú, xã Tam Thanh and xã Tam Phú were merged into a new phường Quảng Phú inside Đà Nẵng city. That is worth knowing for one practical reason: the mural village and the Mẹ Thứ monument are now in the same ward, which is a fair summary of why they belong in the same day. Anything printed before mid-2025 says Quảng Nam and still points at the right lanes.
What is actually painted there?
It began in June 2016 as a Việt–Hàn community art exchange: five Korean artists, volunteers and residents working for about three weeks, painting the walls of lived-in houses. More than a hundred murals came out of it, and the village is generally credited as the first mural village in Vietnam.
Sea air and sun are hard on paint, and Tam Thanh has needed repainting roughly every three years. Four substantial rounds have followed the first:
- 2017 — painted thuyền thúng, the round bamboo basket boats, set along the road in, by lecturers from Singapore University of Technology and Design, members of Hội Mỹ thuật Việt Nam and Chi hội Mỹ thuật Quảng Nam, and student volunteers from Hà Nội. VnExpress called it the country's first basket-boat road; it went on show at Festival Di sản Quảng Nam 2017.
- 2020 — about 50 new basket boats painted and 30 faded ones restored, done voluntarily by art teachers from Tam Kỳ and artists from Hà Nội.
- 2023 — the biggest refresh: 25 new murals, 50 basket-boat works and four sculptures, on environmental and nature themes, delivered inside the Lễ hội Tam Kỳ – mùa hoa sưa programme. The same year the village was formally recognised as a điểm du lịch, an official tourist site.
- 2024 — a further 20 works on house walls, plus painting on basket boats, oars and working fishing gear.
So what you see depends on when you come. Some panels are vivid and two years old; others have gone chalky, and the local press has written plainly about the fading. A few walls went altogether when the houses behind them came down. We say this before we leave Hội An, because the village rewards people who came to walk through a fishing hamlet and are pleased to find it painted, and underwhelms anyone expecting an open-air gallery with a ticket desk.
What is the basket-boat road?
A stretch of the approach where old thuyền thúng — the woven, tar-sealed coracles every boat on this coast carries — stand upright in painted rows, now numbering in the hundreds, with fisherman sculptures added in later rounds. It photographs better than it sounds, and it sits right on the road: the car stops and you are in it.
The lanes are another matter — wide enough for two motorbikes passing, not for a sedan to loiter in. We park at the village edge or the beach end and you walk: an hour at a comfortable pace, ninety minutes if you talk to people. Your driver waits with the car rather than crawling behind you.
How long is the drive, and when should you leave?
From Hội An Old Town: about 57 km, 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 25. East, over cầu Cửa Đại, then south on đường Võ Chí Công — the same coast road that passes VinWonders Nam Hội An at the 17 km mark and then empties out completely. Inland on QL1A through Vĩnh Điện, Nam Phước and Hà Lam is a kilometre or two shorter, no quicker, and full of trucks. Take the coast.
From central Đà Nẵng: about 70 km and 1 hour 30 to 1 hour 45; from Da Nang airport, roughly 72 km and a full 1 hour 40.
Two sensible departures. Leave Hội An at 07:00 and you are walking the murals by 08:30, before the light goes hard and while the boats still come in; the monument at 10:30; lunch in Tam Kỳ or back in Hội An by 13:30. Or leave at 14:00, take the monument first because it shuts at 17:00, and finish in the village for the last hour of light — better for photographs, worse for the village, which is quieter early.
Why is the largest monument in Vietnam seven kilometres away?
Because Nguyễn Thị Thứ lived an hour north of here, and the country chose to build her at scale.
She was born in 1904 at xóm Rừng, thôn Thanh Quýt, in Điện Bàn — today phường An Thắng, Đà Nẵng. Across both wars her family stayed on its land and kept working for the resistance. Nine of her sons were killed, along with a son-in-law and two grandsons; some accounts count her husband too. Her eldest daughter, Lê Thị Trị, was honoured as a Heroic Mother in her own right. She died in 2010, aged 107.
The Tượng đài Mẹ Việt Nam anh hùng on núi Cấm, in thôn Phú Thạnh, broke ground on 27 July 2009 and was inaugurated on 24 March 2015, timed to forty years since the liberation of Quảng Nam. The sculptor was Đinh Gia Thắng. The figure is 18.5 m high, carved in smoke-black sandstone, set in a complex that sources describe variously as 15 to 24 hectares, at a reported cost of some 411 billion VND. Underneath is a memorial hall carrying the names of close to 50,000 Heroic Mothers. It is approached across a wide plaza and a flight of steps, and it is the only stop on this route that reduces a car full of people to silence.
Practically: hours are published as 7:00 to 17:00 or 7:30 to 17:00, so aim for 08:00 to 16:00. Admission is reported inconsistently — some listings print around 50,000 VND, others say nothing is charged, so bring small notes. The site sits on the same Duy Tân corridor between Tam Kỳ and the beach, a detour of minutes rather than a second trip. Shoulders and knees covered is the courteous choice at a war memorial.
Which season does this day belong to?
A dry one. Everything here is outdoors and east-facing, which is exactly wrong from October to December, when the northeast monsoon drives rain and wind straight onto this coast. February to August is the window, and inside it the first two hours after sunrise and the last two before dark are the comfortable ones.
If you are here in April there is a bonus inland: Hương Trà, the old sưa-tree village on the Tam Kỳ river, holds its flowering festival when the trees turn gold — in 2026 it ran 24 to 26 April as Sắc sưa Hương Trà – Đà Nẵng. The bloom lasts days rather than weeks, so it is a date you drive to, not one you hope for.
The short version
Tam Thanh: 57 km and about 1 hour 20 south of Hội An on the coast road, no gate, one hour on foot, painted in 2016 and repainted in 2020, 2023 and 2024. The Mẹ Thứ monument: 7 km away on núi Cấm, 18.5 m of black sandstone, open until 17:00, forty-five minutes. Dry season, early or late, car waiting while you walk the lanes.
If you want this run driven — the empty coast road south, the painted hamlet in the early light, the monument before it closes — tell us the trip at hoiandriver.com/quote. A real driver prices it, a 10% deposit books it, and the balance is settled at trip end in the dollars you were quoted.
good questions
- Where is Tam Thanh mural village?
- On the coast south of Hội An, behind bãi biển Tam Thanh, about 11 to 12 km east of the old Tam Kỳ city centre along đường Duy Tân. The painted stretch is usually given as thôn Trung Thanh. Since 1 July 2025 the address sits in phường Quảng Phú, Đà Nẵng city — older listings print xã Tam Thanh, TP Tam Kỳ, tỉnh Quảng Nam and mean the same lanes.
- How far is Tam Thanh mural village from Hoi An?
- About 57 km, roughly 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 25 by car. The pleasant way is east over cầu Cửa Đại and south on đường Võ Chí Công, the coast road. QL1A inland is a kilometre or two shorter and usually no faster.
- How far is it from Da Nang?
- About 70 km from the city centre and around 1 hour 30 to 1 hour 45; from Da Nang airport allow roughly 72 km and a full 1 hour 40. It is a half-day out of Đà Nẵng rather than an afternoon errand.
- Is there an entrance fee at Tam Thanh?
- No ticket desk has been reported at the village itself — it is a working fishing hamlet with painted walls, and you walk in. The village was formally recognised as a tourist site in 2023, which changed its status on paper rather than putting up a gate.
- What are the Me Thu monument opening hours and ticket?
- Published hours disagree between 7:00 and 17:00 and 7:30 to 17:00. Arrive between 8:00 and 16:00 and you are inside every version. On admission the listings also disagree: some print a visitor charge around 50,000 VND, roughly USD 2, while visitors have reported walking in without one. Carry small notes and ask at the plaza.
- Who was Me Thu?
- Nguyễn Thị Thứ, 1904 to 2010, from xóm Rừng in thôn Thanh Quýt, Điện Bàn — now phường An Thắng, Đà Nẵng. Nine of her sons, a son-in-law and two grandsons were killed across the two wars, and she is remembered as the Heroic Mother who lost the most. She died aged 107, and the statue on núi Cấm was modelled on her.
- When is the best time of year to drive down?
- The murals and the basket boats are outdoors, so this is a dry-season day — roughly February to August, best before 09:30 or after 16:00 once the heat sets in. From October to December the northeast monsoon puts wind and rain on this coast, and it becomes a day to swap rather than endure.
- How long do you need at both stops?
- An hour to ninety minutes walking the mural lanes and the basket-boat road, and about forty-five minutes at the monument including the memorial hall underneath. With drive time that is a comfortable half day from Hội An, or a full relaxed day with lunch in Tam Kỳ.
