New Year's Eve in Da Nang and Hoi An 2026-27: Which Countdown, and the Drive Home After Midnight

The city's published plan puts Countdown 2027 on 31 December at Quảng trường Tam Thanh, Lễ hội Chào năm mới 2027 the same night at Công viên Biển Đông, and a Da Nang Concert on 1 January at Bảo tàng Đà Nẵng — venues that now sit up to 57 km apart, because since the merger Đà Nẵng is one city of 11,860 km². Here is what is actually on over Christmas and New Year, why the venue matters more than the city name, and how a car gets you off a beach road at half past midnight.

Every December the same two questions arrive from people already booked into Hội An: where is the countdown, and can you get us back afterwards. Both answers have changed since last New Year — not because the programme did, but because the city did.

What is actually on, and when does the window open?

Đà Nẵng runs a season, not a night. The city tourism portal lists Danang New Year Festival 2027 across December 2026 into January 2027 at squares, scenic spaces, walking streets and beaches — a month of light installations and stages, not one event with a gate. Inside it, the plan the Sở Văn hóa, Thể thao và Du lịch published on 16 September 2026 for the fourth quarter and the 2026–2027 holiday season names the fixed points:

  • a Countdown 2027 art programme on 31 December at Quảng trường Tam Thanh
  • Lễ hội Chào năm mới 2027 on 31 December at Công viên Biển Đông, the beach park on Võ Nguyên Giáp
  • a Da Nang Concert on 1 January 2027 at the Bảo tàng Đà Nẵng
  • a further new-year arts programme at Quảng trường Tây Giang

Read that as a plan, not a timetable. Hours, stage positions and road closures land in the second half of December; last year's edition is the better guide to the night itself.

Why does "the Đà Nẵng countdown" no longer mean the Hàn River?

Because on 1 July 2025 Quảng Nam province and Đà Nẵng city merged into one city-level unit of roughly 11,860 km², running from the Hải Vân Pass to the Quảng Ngãi border and west into the Trường Sơn. Events badged "Đà Nẵng" are staged across all of it now.

That is not an abstraction when you are fixing a departure time. Công viên Biển Đông is on the beach road, 27 to 30 km from Hội An. A square at Tam Thanh puts you on the coastal strip 57 km south, roughly 1 hour 15 down đường Võ Chí Công. Tây Giang is up in the Trường Sơn on the Lao border, hours west. The venue is the information; the city name is not.

The riverside event is the one most Hội An guests actually want, and last year it existed: Đại lộ Đà Nẵng – Chào năm mới 2026 on the Bạch Đằng walking street, 30 December 2025 to 1 January 2026, in three themed zones called Vũ điệu chào năm mới, Sáng tạo chào năm mới and Quảng trường kết nối — bands and DJs opening, then street performance, traditional cake stalls, câu đối workshops and folk games. If the avenue returns, that is the easy one from Hội An: one road in, one road out, no beach.

What does Hội An do on 31 December?

Hội An holds its own night and moves it. The biggest on record was Thắp sáng di sản – Chào đón 2019 on the Ký ức Hội An outdoor stage at the Công viên Văn hóa Chủ đề Ấn tượng Hội An: over 3,000 lanterns, 50 hot-air balloons, fireworks, gates from 17:00, every visitor handed a lantern to light. Other years it has sat in Công viên Hội An while the Old Town lanes filled on their own.

Nothing is published for this 31 December yet — and what is already certain beats most countdowns. The Old Town does its ordinary evening of lantern light, sampans on the Hoài and the An Hội night market, this year with the art lanterns from Hội An's first international lantern festival still up: they go in for 3 to 6 December and are meant to stay until Tết Nguyên tiêu 2027 in February.

Is there a fireworks show at midnight?

Not as a fixture, and this is where expectations break. Đà Nẵng's civic fireworks belong to the lunar new year: for giao thừa Tết Bính Ngọ the city fired 15 minutes from 00:00 on 17 February 2026 at six separate points, among them Bạch Đằng in phường Hòa Cường, Quảng trường 24/3 in Bàn Thạch and Cồn Bắp. The Gregorian 31 December is concerts, light and crowd; fireworks are possible, not promised.

What you can nearly bank on is cầu Rồng: fire then water at 21:00 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday — eighteen bursts, 15 to 20 minutes — plus major public holidays. 31 December 2026 is a Thursday, not an ordinary show night; 1 January 2027 is a Friday, which is. The bridge shuts to traffic before it performs, and that decides which bank your car waits on.

What about 24 and 25 December?

Christmas Eve is a Thursday, Christmas Day a Friday, and the city's gravity is Nhà thờ Chính tòa Đà Nẵng — the pink Nhà thờ Con Gà at 156 Trần Phú. In 2025 the parish ran a diễn nguyện presentation at 19:30 on 24 December, the night Mass outdoors at 20:30, then Christmas Day Masses at 06:00, 08:00, 10:00 in English and 17:00 outdoors, the forecourt laid out for thousands. Expect the same shape in 2026 and confirm with the parish in December. Đà Nẵng also plays Christmas as street theatre: one recent season put 600 Santas through the streets.

From the driver's seat, 24 December is the hardest parking night of the year in the Trần Phú and Hải Phòng blocks — the crowd is there for the decorations, and it arrives on motorbikes from about 19:00.

What does the holiday do to your airport transfer?

It loads it. Across 22 December 2025 to 4 January 2026 Da Nang airport handled close to 3,600 movements — 1,794 arrivals and 1,780 departures on one count — up 7.6 percent year on year, international flights at 62 a day against 55, peak-hour volumes reported as approaching the design capacity of both T1 and T2. Over the four-day holiday the city logged 908 arriving flights, and on 1 January more than 1,200 visitors arrived from Manila, Incheon, Busan, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

Practically: between 27 December and 4 January, add half an hour to your usual departure margin out of Hội An. 1 January 2027 falls on a Friday — one holiday day under the Labour Code — so it lands against a weekend and the domestic wave spreads over three days.

When should you leave, and where can the car be at 00:30?

  • Hội An to Công viên Biển Đông: 27 to 30 km, 35 to 45 minutes on an ordinary evening. For a 19:00 start, leave by 17:30.
  • Hội An to the Bạch Đằng riverfront: about 30 km, 40 to 50 minutes. Leave by 17:00; the walking street closes progressively and the last kilometre is on foot.
  • Hội An to Tam Thanh: 57 km south, 1 hour 15 on the coast road — if that square is the venue, a different day in the other direction.
  • Airport-area hotels to Công viên Biển Đông: 6 to 7 km, 15 minutes.

The hard part is not getting there. It is 00:15, when a crowd that assembled over four hours leaves one beach road in ten minutes. What works every year: a named meeting corner two or three streets back from the barriers, agreed before you get out of the car, and a departure either before 00:10 or after 00:45. Back to Hội An from the beach road after midnight runs 45 to 70 minutes rather than the usual 40. And no car reaches Hội An's heritage core: the drop is the An Hội bridge end, the Nguyễn Hoàng side or a Phan Chu Trinh corner, a block further out on a festival night.

The short version

Danang New Year Festival 2027 runs December into January. The plan's 31 December programmes are at Quảng trường Tam Thanh and Công viên Biển Đông, the Da Nang Concert at Bảo tàng Đà Nẵng on 1 January — confirm the venue in mid-December, because they sit up to 57 km apart. Hội An's own night is unpublished; its lantern-lit evening is not, and December's lantern installations stand into February. Fireworks belong to the lunar new year. Cầu Rồng performs on Friday 1 January at 21:00. The night turns on one daylight decision: where the car waits at half past midnight.

good questions

Where is the Da Nang countdown on 31 December 2026?
The plan published by Đà Nẵng's Sở Văn hóa, Thể thao và Du lịch on 16 September 2026 names two separate things on the same night: a Countdown 2027 art programme at Quảng trường Tam Thanh, and Lễ hội Chào năm mới 2027 at Công viên Biển Đông, the beach park on Võ Nguyên Giáp. A further new-year programme is listed for Quảng trường Tây Giang. Those are plans rather than a timetable — stage positions, hours and road closures are published in the second half of December, so confirm the venue before you fix a departure time.
Is there a fireworks display in Da Nang on New Year's Eve?
Not as a fixture. Đà Nẵng's big civic fireworks are attached to the lunar new year: for giao thừa Tết Bính Ngọ the city fired 15 minutes from 00:00 on 17 February 2026 at six separate points. The Gregorian 31 December is built on concerts, light installations and crowd rather than a guaranteed fireworks show.
Does the Dragon Bridge breathe fire on New Year?
The published pattern is 21:00 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday — eighteen fire bursts then water, 15 to 20 minutes — plus major public holidays. In this window 31 December 2026 is a Thursday, which is not an ordinary show night, and 1 January 2027 is a Friday, which is. The bridge closes to traffic before it starts, so it decides which bank your car can be on.
What does Hoi An do on 31 December?
Hội An has run its own new-year night for years and moves the venue between editions — the Ký ức Hội An outdoor stage at the Công viên Văn hóa Chủ đề Ấn tượng Hội An in one year, Công viên Hội An in another. Nothing was published for 31 December 2026 as of mid-October. What is certain is that the Old Town does its ordinary evening of lanterns, river boats and the An Hội night market, with the art-lantern clusters from the December international lantern festival still standing.
What happens at Christmas in Da Nang?
The centre of it is Nhà thờ Chính tòa Đà Nẵng, the pink Nhà thờ Con Gà at 156 Trần Phú. In 2025 the parish ran a diễn nguyện presentation at 19:30 on 24 December and the night Mass outdoors at 20:30, then Christmas Day Masses at 06:00, 08:00, 10:00 in English and 17:00 outdoors. Expect 2026 to follow the same shape and confirm at the parish in December. The streets around it fill with people who have come for the decorations rather than the liturgy.
How busy is Da Nang airport over New Year?
Heavily loaded. Across 22 December 2025 to 4 January 2026 the airport handled close to 3,600 movements — one count put it at 3,574, with 1,794 arrivals and 1,780 departures — up 7.6 percent year on year, with international flights at 62 a day against 55. Peak-hour volumes were reported as approaching the design capacity of both T1 and T2. Over the four-day holiday the city counted 908 arriving flights.
When should you leave Hoi An for the Da Nang countdown?
For a 19:00 start at Công viên Biển Đông, leave Hội An by about 17:30 — the run is roughly 27 to 30 km and 35 to 45 minutes on an ordinary evening, and 31 December is not an ordinary evening. For the Bạch Đằng riverfront, leave by 17:00. If the venue turns out to be Quảng trường Tam Thanh, that is 57 km in the opposite direction, about 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 25 south on the coast road.
What is the weather like in Hoi An and Da Nang in late December?
The tail of the wet season, and much drier than October and November. Published monthly ranges sit around 18 to 27 degrees for Hội An and a little cooler in Đà Nẵng, with north-east monsoon evenings, morning mist and showers rather than sustained rain. An outdoor midnight on a beach road or a riverbank is a long-sleeve night, genuinely cold in wind.
