Cham Dance at My Son 2026: The 15th-of-the-Month Programme and When to Leave Hoi An For It
Twice a month the Mỹ Sơn management board moves its Chăm musicians out of the theatre and in among the brick: Âm vang Mỹ Sơn, on the 15th of every calendar month, at the B-C-D tower group, 09:00 and 14:45. The next two fall on Sunday 15 November and Tuesday 15 December 2026. That 09:00 start sits squarely inside the hour we normally tell people to avoid, so here is how the driving day has to change to catch it.

We have spent a lot of words telling people to be at the Mỹ Sơn gate at six in the morning, and we stand by every one of them. But twice in the next six weeks that advice is wrong, and it is worth explaining exactly why.
On the 15th of each calendar month the management board does something it does not do on the other twenty-nine or thirty days: it takes the Chăm musicians and dancers out of the covered performance house near the entrance and puts them among the brick, at the B-C-D tower group — the central cluster, the one with the surviving carved detail, the one in every photograph of this valley. The programme is called Âm vang Mỹ Sơn. There are two sets, 09:00 and 14:45, and Đà Nẵng's published year-end arts calendar carries it for both November and December 2026.
The next one is Sunday 15 November. After that, Tuesday 15 December, then Friday 15 January 2027.
Why does the 15th change the driving day?
Because 09:00 is inside the window we normally tell people to drive away from. Between roughly 09:30 and 11:30 the coach circuit has landed, there is no shade worth the name in the tower groups, and the valley stops being a valley and becomes a queue. The dawn run exists to put you in front of all of that.
Âm vang Mỹ Sơn asks you to still be there when it arrives.
The resolution is not to abandon the early start — it is to shorten it. Leave Hội An by 06:45. The gate opens at 06:00 and the drive is about 40 km and an hour, west through Duy Xuyên and out along DT610, so you are at the ticket hall near 07:45, through the shuttle by 08:00, and over the stream into the towers by about ten past. That hands you fifty quiet minutes — enough to walk B, C and D properly, climb to G and H where the crowd never reaches, and still be standing in the central group, in position, before the first note.
From central Đà Nẵng it is 69 km and 80 to 90 minutes; leave by 07:15. From the airport, allow the same — it is the same road once you are clear of the bridges. And from September onward add ten minutes to all of it, because the last stretch is a two-lane country road through rice and cassava and it holds water.
The afternoon set is the quieter trade, and in November it may be the better one. Leave Hội An around 12:30 for the 14:45: you arrive as the coaches are leaving, watch the set, then have the low sun coming in sideways across the brick until the gate closes at 17:00. Low afternoon light does more for Chăm carving than any hour of the morning. The risk you are accepting is rain over Duy Xuyên, which in the back end of the wet season is a routine afternoon event rather than bad luck.
What runs on the other days?
Plenty — this is not a site where the dancing is a once-a-month event.
The board's own schedule lists five sets a day at the performance house: 09:45, 10:30, 11:15, 14:00 and 16:00, every day of the week unless cancelled. The troupe's working day starts earlier than the first public set; Báo Đà Nẵng's reporting on the ensemble describes them beginning at 08:30.
Honesty about this timetable matters more than confidence. Third-party travel pages circulate at least three competing versions, with 09:15, 10:15, 10:45 and 15:30 all turning up somewhere, and some claim the sets run on alternate days rather than daily. The board's page is the one to believe, and the board posted at the ticket hall on the morning you arrive beats everything. Build your day on the 15th around 09:00 or 14:45; build any other day around "there will be a set mid-morning and a set mid-afternoon" and check on arrival.
Separately, hát dân ca Chăm — Chăm folk song rather than dance — runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 09:00 and 14:45, out on the H tower slope, the dốc Tháp H. Some ticketing pages place it at the G group instead; G and H sit adjacent on the same rise, so this is a question to ask at the gate rather than a contradiction to solve in advance. It is fully open-air and it is suspended in bad weather, which in November is a live possibility rather than a footnote.
What are you actually watching?
The repertoire is drawn from Chăm folk material and has been serving visitors here since 2004, performed by the management board's own folk-arts section rather than a contracted troupe. What you will see across a set of about twenty minutes: the Apsara dance, the celestial dancer lifted off the stone of these towers and put back into a body; the stick dance and the fan dance; a piece built from the Shiva tower statuary; and Aday melodies. The sound is carried by two instruments — the Paranưng, the hand-held frame drum held against the chest, and the Saranai, the reed horn that gives Chăm music its particular nasal, unmistakable line.
The Apsara piece carries real credits: choreography by Thọ Thái, music by the Chăm composer Amư Nhân. It is worth knowing that the hardest part of keeping this programme alive, in the ensemble's own account to Báo Đà Nẵng, is not the choreography but finding dancers.
Does it cost extra?
No. The 2026 ticket is a single 250,000 VND for every visitor — roughly 10 USD, charged identically to Vietnamese and foreign guests, replacing the 150,000 and 100,000 split that stood about a decade. That ticket carries the electric shuttle on the two-kilometre run from the ticket area in to the towers, and it carries the Chăm art performance. Nobody collects anything at the theatre door or out at B-C-D.
If you find a page quoting 100,000 or 150,000 for a 2026 visit, it has not been updated. Budget 250,000 per adult and confirm at the counter.
And the night show?
Đêm Mỹ Sơn huyền thoại is the produced one: three chapters over about sixty minutes, staged among lit towers after dark, and by every account worth seeing. It also does not run to a calendar you can book against. It was introduced with an intention to settle on the 16th of each lunar month, but by December 2025 the board's deputy director, Nguyễn Công Khiết, was describing the schedule as set case by case around large groups while the board worked with a partner towards something more regular.
The most recent November edition ran on the evening of 21 November 2025, 19:00 to 20:30, with the gate opened free from 17:30 — timed to Ngày Di sản Văn hóa Việt Nam on 23 November. That anniversary falls on a Monday this year, and 23 November to 7 December is also Hội An's heritage fortnight, so a 2026 staging is plausible. It had not been announced when this was written. Ask, do not assume, and keep the 15th as your reliable date.
The short version
- Sunday 15 November and Tuesday 15 December 2026: Âm vang Mỹ Sơn at the B-C-D group, 09:00 and 14:45.
- For the morning set, leave Hội An 06:45 / Đà Nẵng 07:15. For the afternoon set, leave Hội An 12:30 and stay for the late light.
- Any other day: performance-house sets listed at 09:45, 10:30, 11:15, 14:00, 16:00; folk song Mon / Wed / Fri, 09:00 and 14:45, on the H slope.
- All of it is inside the 250,000 VND ticket, shuttle included.
- The open-air sets go off in heavy rain. In November, carry that as a real possibility and keep the performance-house option in reserve.
- The car park is at the ticket area, not the towers. Your driver waits there for the whole visit, which on a 15th is closer to three hours than ninety minutes.
If you want the 15th driven properly — out of Hội An before seven, the quiet hour first, in position at B-C-D for nine — tell us the trip at hoiandriver.com/quote. A real driver prices it, and a 10% deposit books it.
good questions
- What is Am Vang My Son?
- Âm vang Mỹ Sơn is a Chăm music and dance programme staged by the management board's own folk-arts section, performed not in the site theatre but out at the B-C-D tower group — the central cluster everyone photographs. It runs on the 15th of each calendar month, with a morning set at 09:00 and an afternoon set at 14:45, and Đà Nẵng's year-end programme listings confirm it for both November and December 2026.
- When is the next Am Vang My Son performance?
- Sunday 15 November 2026, then Tuesday 15 December 2026, then Friday 15 January 2027. The date is fixed to the 15th of the Gregorian month rather than the lunar calendar, so it is unusually easy to plan around — but the board does cancel for weather and operational reasons and posts notice when it does.
- Do performances run at My Son every day as well?
- Yes. The board's own schedule lists five sets a day at the on-site performance house — 09:45, 10:30, 11:15, 14:00 and 16:00 — running every day of the week unless cancelled. Be aware that third-party travel pages circulate several different timetables for these, with 09:15, 10:15, 10:45 and 15:30 all appearing somewhere. Read the board posted at the ticket hall on arrival and treat any schedule you found online, including this one, as provisional.
- What is the Cham folk singing on Monday, Wednesday and Friday?
- A separate product: hát dân ca Chăm, Chăm folk song, staged three days a week at 09:00 and 14:45. The board's listing places it on the H tower slope, dốc Tháp H, while some ticketing pages put it at the G group — they are adjacent on the same rise, so ask at the gate which one is in use that day. It is open-air, and it is suspended in bad weather.
- What do the performers actually do?
- The repertoire is built from Chăm folk material: the Apsara dance, the stick dance, the fan dance, a dance drawn from the Shiva tower statuary, and Aday melodies, carried by the Paranưng drum and the Saranai reed horn. The Apsara piece credits Thọ Thái for choreography and the Chăm composer Amư Nhân for the music. Individual sets run about twenty minutes.
- Is the performance included in the My Son ticket?
- Yes. The 2026 ticket — a single 250,000 VND for every visitor, Vietnamese and foreign alike, replacing the old 150,000 and 100,000 split — carries the electric shuttle in from the ticket area and the Chăm art performance. Nothing is collected separately at the theatre or at the tower group. Travel pages still quoting 100,000 or 150,000 for 2026 are stale rather than cheap.
- What time should I leave Hoi An to catch the 09:00 set?
- Leave Hội An by 06:45. That puts you at the ticket hall around 07:45, through the shuttle by 08:00, and walking the towers for the best part of an hour before you need to be standing at B-C-D at 09:00. Leaving at 08:00 technically makes the set, but it hands you the towers at their fullest and gives you nothing beforehand.
- Is there a night show at My Son?
- There is a produced one — Đêm Mỹ Sơn huyền thoại, three chapters over about sixty minutes among the lit towers — but it does not run to a published calendar. In December 2025 the board's deputy director, Nguyễn Công Khiết, said the schedule was set case by case around large groups while the board worked with a partner towards something regular. The November 2025 edition ran on the evening of 21 November, 19:00 to 20:30, with free gate entry from 17:30, tied to Vietnam Cultural Heritage Day on 23 November. No 2026 equivalent had been announced when this was written. Do not build a trip around it without a confirmation.
