How Many Days in Hoi An and Da Nang 2026: What Each Extra Night Actually Buys
Đà Nẵng publishes the answer to this question itself, and it is shorter than any itinerary admits: an average stay of 1.84 days a visit across the first nine months of 2026. From the driver's seat that is a transfer, one lantern evening and a departure. Here is what the third, fourth and fifth nights buy, measured in drive times and departure hours rather than bullet points.

Đà Nẵng answers this question about itself, in public, every quarter — and the answer is shorter than any itinerary will admit. Across the first nine months of 2026 the city reported roughly 15.8 million overnight-guest arrivals, about 7.7 million of them international, and an average stay of 1.84 days a visit: around two days for international visitors, 1.65 for Vietnamese. On 18 October 2026, at Ngày hội Du lịch Quốc tế Đà Nẵng, the city put that figure in front of more than 300 supplier businesses and some 550 buyers and asked the room what would make people stay longer.
From the driver's seat 1.84 days is easy to picture, because we drive both ends of it: an airport transfer, one dinner under the lanterns, a departure run. It is a real trip. It is not the region. Here is what each night after that actually buys, priced in drive times rather than bullet points.
What does the 1.84-day average actually measure?
Overnight guests in registered accommodation, counted city-wide — and since the 2025 administrative merger folded Quảng Nam into Đà Nẵng, "city-wide" now includes the Hội An wards and Mỹ Sơn. A guest who sleeps two nights beside the Thu Bồn and one by the Hàn River sits inside the same figure.
The reported series is steady and, if anything, drifting down: 1.88 days across eleven months of 2025, 1.78 in the first quarter of 2026, 1.82 at eight months, 1.84 at nine. What the average hides is geography. This is a 30 km strip with an anchor at each end and almost everything worth a morning hanging off it — the Chăm towers 40 km west, the mountain 60 km north-west, Huế 125 km north. The reason the number sits under two nights is not that people dislike the place. It is that two nights is what a transit stop looks like.
What does two nights buy?
Arrival day is not a day. Da Nang airport to the Hội An Ancient Town is 30 km and about 45 minutes, and whatever is left of the afternoon goes on a shower and finding dinner. The Old Town ticket is 120,000 VND for foreign visitors, around five US dollars, and admits five heritage sites of your choosing — enough for an afternoon, not an itinerary.
So two nights gives you one genuine full day: the heritage grid on foot in the morning, the market, a tailor's first fitting if you are quick, and the riverbank after dark when the lanterns come on. Then departure morning, which is not a morning either — for an international flight, the car leaves the Hội An end about three hours before departure.
Two nights is the Old Town, properly, and nothing else. If that is your trip, it works. Just do not also put Mỹ Sơn, Bà Nà and Huế on the list.
What does the third night buy? A 05:00 departure
The third night is the best-value night on the whole strip, because it buys a dawn.
Mỹ Sơn is 40 km west of Hội An, about an hour each way. The gate opens at 06:00 and runs to roughly 17:00, daily, holidays included. In 2026 the management board moved to a single 250,000 VND ticket for everyone, about ten US dollars, replacing the old 150,000 VND foreign and 100,000 VND Vietnamese split. Leave Hội An at 05:00 and you are at the gate as it opens, walking the brick towers in cool light with the site close to empty — the coach blocks build later in the morning. Back in town for a late breakfast.
That is the whole argument for night three: it costs you one early alarm and returns the single most important monument in central Vietnam, seen the way almost nobody sees it. Add the third night before you add anything else.
What does the fourth night buy? The Đà Nẵng end
Night four buys the other anchor, and it needs its own morning rather than a slice of someone else's.
Bà Nà Hills is 60 km from Hội An, 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30 out through Điện Ngọc and up. The published 2026 adult ticket is 1,000,000 VND, roughly 38 USD, covering the cable car, Cầu Vàng, the French Village and the gardens — and it is now valid three consecutive days, which turns a weather gamble into two attempts. First cabins run from 08:00, so the car leaves Hội An at 06:30 to 06:45 to be at the Suối Mơ base station before the queue thickens.
The alternative shape for night four stays lower: Sơn Trà and the Lady Buddha, the Chăm sculpture museum, the city's eating streets, then the Hải Vân Pass — 62 km from Hội An, 28 km from Đà Nẵng — for the view back down over the bay.
One correction to most four-day plans: the Marble Mountains are about 20 km from the Old Town and 13 km from the airport — a stop inside a transfer, not a day. Put them on the airport leg and keep your mornings for what cannot be reached in twenty-five minutes.
Is the fifth night Huế, or a rest day?
Both are defensible, and the drive decides.
Huế is 125 km north. Through the hầm Hải Vân, the tunnel, it is 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours door to door with no stops. As a day trip that is close to six hours in the car for the Imperial City and lunch, and it is the one day guests most often tell us they would re-plan. If Huế matters to you, give it a night: up over the Hải Vân Pass with stops in the morning, the Citadel and a tomb the next day, home through the tunnel.
If Huế does not matter to you, spend night five on slack — a beach morning at An Bàng, a cooking class, a second tailor fitting, the coconut-palm waterways at Cẩm Thanh. Slack is not wasted; it is the day that absorbs a cancelled plan.
How does the season change the number?
In October and November the answer goes up by one. The rainy season runs roughly September to November, flood risk concentrates in these two months, and the rain arrives in bursts rather than sheets — which is why drivers front-load everything outdoor into the mornings. One spare day absorbs a high-water afternoon without costing you Mỹ Sơn. From February to May the mornings are reliable enough that a four-night trip behaves like a five-night one.
What order do the days want to go in?
- Sleep at the end that matters to you. Hội An if the Ancient Town is the point; Đà Nẵng if the beach and the bridges are. The 30 km between them is 45 minutes, not a commitment.
- Front-load the dawns. Mỹ Sơn at 05:00, Bà Nà at 06:30. Both collapse into ordinary days if you leave at nine.
- Spend the pass once, in the clear direction. The tunnel is the all-weather route; the pass is the view.
- Keep the last morning empty. Departure margin eats it anyway.
The shapes that work
| Nights | What it realistically holds |
|---|---|
| 2 | Old Town on foot, one lantern evening, airport both ends |
| 3 | The above plus Mỹ Sơn at 06:00, back for breakfast |
| 4 | Add the Đà Nẵng end: Bà Nà from 08:00, or Sơn Trà and Hải Vân |
| 5 | Add Huế with a night, or a slack day and An Bàng |
| 7 | All of it unhurried, with a wet-season spare day still in hand |
The city's own number says most people take the first line of that table. The third line costs two more nights and roughly doubles what you come home with.
If you would rather hand the clock to someone who drives it daily — the 05:00 run west, the 06:30 climb, the departure margin worked backwards from your flight — tell us the shape of the trip at hoiandriver.com/quote. A real driver prices it in USD, a 10% non-refundable deposit books it and holds your driver and your dates, and the balance is paid at trip end.
good questions
- How many days do you need in Hoi An?
- Two nights covers the Old Town itself and nothing beyond it. Three nights is the first honest answer, because the third buys a dawn run to Mỹ Sơn and still leaves a full day in town. Four to five nights is where the Đà Nẵng end, the Hải Vân road and a slack day fit without compressing anything.
- How long does the average visitor stay in Da Nang and Hoi An?
- Less than two nights. Across the first nine months of 2026 the city reported an average stay of 1.84 days per overnight guest — about two days for international visitors and 1.65 for Vietnamese — against roughly 15.8 million overnight arrivals, of which about 7.7 million were international.
- Is Hoi An or Da Nang the better base for a short trip?
- For three nights or fewer, base at the Hội An end if the Ancient Town is why you came; the airport is 30 km and about 45 minutes away, so the transfer costs you little. For a trip built around the beach, the bridges and city food, the Đà Nẵng end saves driving.
- Can you do My Son and Ba Na Hills on the same day?
- You can, but it wastes both. Mỹ Sơn works at 06:00 when the gate opens and the towers are empty; Bà Nà works from the 08:00 first cabins before the day crowd lands. Each wants its own morning, which is exactly why the third and fourth nights are the ones worth adding.
- Is Hue a day trip from Hoi An or does it need a night?
- It works as a long day — 125 km, 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours each way through the Hải Vân tunnel with no stops — but that is close to six hours in the car. If Huế matters to you, give it a night and come back over the Hải Vân Pass with stops instead.
- How early does the car have to leave on departure day?
- For an international flight out of Đà Nẵng, plan on leaving the Hội An end about three hours before departure; the drive is 45 minutes and the rest is airport. That is why the last morning of a trip is never a sightseeing morning — it belongs to margin.
- Does the rainy season change how many days you need?
- Yes — add one. October and November carry the flood risk and the rain falls in bursts rather than all day, so outdoor plans go in the mornings and one spare day absorbs a high-water afternoon. A plan with no give is the only plan the season can break.
- What can you see in one day between two flights?
- The Marble Mountains, 13 km from the airport and about 20 km from the Old Town, are the one major stop that fits inside a transfer rather than needing a day of its own. They belong on the airport leg, not on your sightseeing days.
