Hoi An to Phong Nha 2026: The 350 km North, the Boat You Cannot Skip, and the Weeks the Caves Close

Phong Nha is about 350 km north of Hội An — six and a half to seven and a half hours of real driving, not a day trip, and since 1 July 2025 not even in Quảng Bình any more. Here is the honest shape of the journey: which of the three roads north to take, what the caves cost now, why the river decides whether you see them at all in October and November, and where the car has to wait while you are on a boat it cannot follow.

The request usually arrives in one line: can we do Phong Nha as a day trip from Hội An? From the driver's seat the answer is no — and the long version is the useful one, because the trip is worth making in the right shape.

Where is Phong Nha, and why does the address say Quảng Trị now?

Phong Nha - Kẻ Bàng is the limestone country along the Laos border, and the village everyone means by "Phong Nha" is xã Phong Nha, strung along the sông Son with the boat jetty at its middle.

Two things changed under it recently, and both confuse bookings. From 1 July 2025, under Nghị quyết 202/2025/QH15 and Nghị quyết 1680/NQ-UBTVQH15, Quảng Bình merged with Quảng Trị under the name Quảng Trị, seat at Đồng Hới, 78 commune-level units. Your hotel confirmation may still say Quảng Bình. Same gate.

Then, on 13 July 2025, UNESCO's 47th session in Paris extended the heritage boundary across the border to take in Hin Nam Nô National Park in Khammouane, Laos, from a dossier the two countries lodged in February 2024. The site is now inscribed as "Phong Nha - Kẻ Bàng National Park and Hin Nam No National Park" — Việt Nam's first transboundary World Heritage property.

How far is it, and how long does the drive actually take?

About 350 km from Hội An, about 320 km from Đà Nẵng. Published guides say six to eight hours, a range too wide to plan a departure from. The number we work to: six and a half to seven and a half hours of moving time, and with fuel, lunch and one photo stop, a nine- to ten-hour travel day each way.

The shape of it: Hội An to Đà Nẵng is the first 30 km, the Hải Vân tunnel comes up around the hour mark, Huế lands at roughly two and a half hours, Đông Hà and Cam Lộ at four and a half to five, then the road turns inland into the karst.

Which of the three roads north should you take?

Quốc lộ 1 is the direct one and the busy one — trucks, buses, towns strung along it. Rarely the slowest, never the calmest.

The expressway is the newer answer. Cam Lộ - La Sơn runs 98.3 km and joins La Sơn - Túy Loan (77.5 km) for an unbroken 175 km behind Đà Nẵng and Huế. What nobody tells you: it is two lanes with limits of 60 to 80 km/h, and a widening to four lanes costed at around 7,000 billion đồng has not happened. It buys calm, not speed.

Đường Hồ Chí Minh, inland, is the beautiful, empty one — almost no traffic, almost no services. Good going up with a full tank, bad at the end of a long day.

In practice the car uses more than one: expressway where it flows, Quốc lộ 1 where it dawdles, decided on the morning with the rain radar open.

Whichever it is, the stops are what keep a long transfer from being one: Lập An lagoon and Lăng Cô below Hải Vân, Huế at halfway, and north of Đông Hà the old partition line — the Hiền Lương bridge over the Bến Hải at the 17th parallel, and the Vĩnh Mốc tunnels, where a village lived underground.

One day, two days, or a night in Phong Nha?

A same-day return is thirteen to sixteen hours in a car to buy roughly three hours of cave. We will drive it if asked, and say first that it is the one trip here where the maths does not work. The two shapes that do:

One night in Phong Nha village. Leave Hội An early, arrive mid-afternoon, take Thiên Đường in the late light, then the boat into động Phong Nha at opening next morning with the jetty empty, and drive back after lunch.

Two nights with Huế as the hinge. Huế is almost exactly halfway and a city rather than a waypoint: Hội An to Huế, Huế to Phong Nha, home on day three.

What is actually at the end, and what does it cost?

There is no single park gate fee: tickets are per cave, operators differ, published lists disagree. Treat these as the shape of the spend; the ticket window is final.

Động Phong Nha — 150,000 VND per person, children under 1.3 m free, plus a boat at about 700,000 VND for up to twelve with life jackets; some lists show 550,000 VND, or around 750,000 VND for a return taking in Tiên Sơn. The system runs 7,729 m with 14 grottoes and a 13,969 m underground river, 44.5 km surveyed, and visitors see the first 1,500 m — reached only by boat, which matters for the car.

Động Tiên Sơn — 80,000 VND, a dry cave above the river, 980 m long with about 400 m open: twenty minutes, usually skipped, and the better light.

Động Thiên Đường — 250,000 VND for the 1 km boardwalk (one to two hours inside), 500,000 VND for the 7 km route. Found in 2005 and surveyed at 31.4 km in 2010, it is rated by the British Cave Research Association as Asia's longest dry cave, 20 to 25 km from Phong Nha village by road.

Sông Chày - hang Tối is the wet, active one — zipline, kayak, mud bath — listed around 450,000 VND for adults and children over 130 cm, 150,000 VND for 100-130 cm and free below, hours 06:30 to 17:00. Best April to July, which is the honest limit of it.

Two caves is a full day; the order that works is the boat first thing, Thiên Đường after lunch.

Why does October decide this trip?

Because the attraction is a river. Heavy rain upstream — much of it across the border in Laos — brings the Son and the Chày up fast, and the Phong Nha - Kẻ Bàng tourism centre then suspends visits by name: động Phong Nha, động Tiên Sơn, the 4,500 m deep-exploration route, sông Chày - hang Tối and suối Nước Moọc. An early-October notice has closed precisely that list; storms have done it in August. Closures run days rather than weeks, and arrive without warning.

Even short of a closure the water can be wrong. In July 2026 the Son ran brown for days — the centre's director pointing mainly to heavy upstream rain in Laos — and visitor numbers fell by around 20%.

So in October and November, never let Phong Nha be the only reason for a northbound day. Build it so Huế, Lăng Cô and the partition corridor each justify themselves, phone the jetty the morning of, and treat the cave as a bonus.

And Sơn Đoòng — can you just add it?

No, and it is worth knowing why. Oxalis Adventure is the only licensed operator, the season runs January to August, groups are capped at ten, the allocation is about 1,000 places a year. 2026 sold out early, 2027 is gone, 2028 is reported filling or full. The price sits near 80 million đồng, about US$3,000 per person, ages 18 to 70, real outdoor experience required. The operator has warned about look-alike booking sites, so the only safe route is its own. Hang Én is the alternative for anyone who cannot wait three years.

Where does the car wait, and when do you leave?

For a village arrival with daylight left, leave Hội An between 06:00 and 07:00 — 05:00 for the one-day version nobody should attempt.

At Phong Nha the car's job ends at the bến thuyền. The cave is reached only by boat up the Son, the river has no road beside it, and your driver cannot follow — so it is a drop at the jetty and a wait of two and a half to three hours. At Thiên Đường the car park sits below the mountain: allow half an hour each way between car and cave mouth.

If you would rather hand over the northbound shape — the road chosen on the morning's weather, the jetty called before you commit, Huế carrying the day if the river is high — tell us the trip at hoiandriver.com/quote. A real driver prices it, a 10% deposit books it, and the balance is settled in USD at the end of the trip.

good questions

How far is Phong Nha from Hoi An, and how long does it take by car?
About 350 km from Hội An and about 320 km from Đà Nẵng. Published guides give a range of six to eight hours; from the seat, six and a half to seven and a half hours of moving time is the honest number, and with fuel, food and one photo stop it becomes a nine- to ten-hour travel day in each direction.
Can you do Phong Nha as a day trip from Hoi An?
You can physically, and almost nobody should. A same-day return is thirteen to sixteen hours in a car to buy roughly three hours of cave. The two shapes that work are one night in Phong Nha village, or two nights with a stop in Huế on the way up or back.
Is Phong Nha in Quang Binh or Quang Tri now?
Quảng Trị. From 1 July 2025, under Nghị quyết 202/2025/QH15 and Nghị quyết 1680/NQ-UBTVQH15, Quảng Bình merged with Quảng Trị under the name Quảng Trị, with the administrative seat at Đồng Hới and 78 commune-level units in the new province. The village is xã Phong Nha. Older listings still say Quảng Bình; it is the same place.
What does it cost to visit Phong Nha cave in 2026?
There is no single park gate fee — tickets are charged per cave, and several caves are run by different operators, so lists disagree. Động Phong Nha is widely listed at 150,000 VND per person with children under 1.3 m free, plus a boat at about 700,000 VND for a boat carrying up to twelve with life jackets; some lists show 550,000 VND, or around 750,000 VND for a return covering both Phong Nha and Tiên Sơn. Động Tiên Sơn is 80,000 VND. Động Thiên Đường is 250,000 VND for the 1 km boardwalk and 500,000 VND for the 7 km route.
Why do Phong Nha's caves close in October and November?
Because they are a live river system. After heavy upstream rain, much of it falling in Laos, the Son and the Chày rise quickly, and the Phong Nha - Kẻ Bàng tourism centre suspends visits by name: động Phong Nha, động Tiên Sơn, the 4,500 m deep-exploration route, sông Chày - hang Tối and suối Nước Moọc. Suspensions typically last days rather than weeks, but they land without notice, which is why Phong Nha should never be the only reason for a northbound day in the wet months.
Can you book a Son Doong tour in 2026?
No. Oxalis Adventure is the only licensed operator, the season runs January to August, groups are capped at ten people and the permit allocation is about a thousand places a year. The 2026 season sold out early and 2027 is gone as well, with 2028 reported as filling or sold out. The tour runs near 80 million VND, about US$3,000 per person, for ages 18 to 70 with genuine outdoor experience. The operator has publicly warned about look-alike booking sites, so book only through its own channels.
What is worth stopping for between Hoi An and Phong Nha?
Lập An lagoon and Lăng Cô at the foot of Hải Vân, Huế at roughly the two-and-a-half-hour mark, and then the old partition corridor north of Đông Hà: the Hiền Lương bridge over the Bến Hải at the 17th parallel and the Vĩnh Mốc tunnels near the coast. Three stops turn the dead kilometres into the reason for the day.
Is it better to fly or take the train to Phong Nha instead?
For some people, clearly yes. Đồng Hới airport is about 45 km from Phong Nha, roughly 45 to 50 minutes by road, and the train from Đà Nẵng to Đồng Hới takes four to five hours. A car at each end with rail in between is the sensible shape for travellers who will not enjoy seven hours of highway.
