Hoi An to Hue by Car 2026: The Three Roads North and What They Now Cost

Every long-distance run we make out of Hội An goes north, and every one of them has to solve the same problem: a mountain spur of the Trường Sơn range drops straight into the sea between Đà Nẵng and Huế, and there are only three ways past it. A tunnel under it. A pass over it. And an expressway that goes around the back through the hills.

In 2026 all three changed. The summit started selling tickets on 2 June. The expressway went back under restriction on 1 July. The tunnel is the only one that stayed the same, which is its whole appeal.

How long does the drive from Hội An to Huế actually take?

About 125 km, and the number that matters is not the distance.

Through the hầm Hải Vân, the tunnel, it is 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours door to door with no stops. Over đèo Hải Vân, the pass, add 30 to 45 minutes: the pass road is 21 km of continuous switchbacks climbing to roughly 496 m, and no car takes it quickly.

Reference points from the driver's seat, all without stops:

• Hội An to the pass summit: about 80 km, 1 hour 45
• Đà Nẵng city centre to the summit: about 28 km, 50 minutes
• Summit down to Lăng Cô: 20 minutes
• Lăng Cô to Huế: about 65 km, 1 hour 15

A real day — pass summit, lagoon, lunch, one temple stop — runs 5 to 6 hours elapsed. Roughly half of that is the engine running.

Tunnel, pass, or expressway — which one?

The tunnel. 110,000 VND for a vehicle under 12 seats, a rate unchanged since 1 May 2021, paid at the Bắc Hải Vân station. Inside: 60 km/h maximum, radio on the tunnel frequency, no overtaking, no reversing, no turning. Motorbikes are not allowed through at all, and heavy trucks over 10 tonnes, dangerous-goods vehicles and oversize loads are pushed back onto the pass. That last rule is why the pass road always has a few lorries on it.

The pass. Free, open around the clock, and the reason to do this journey by car instead of by train. It is also the road that gets closed or slowed by fog, by landslips in the wet months, and by the coaches that stop three-abreast at the summit car park.

The expressway, La Sơn – Hòa Liên. Read the restriction before you plan around it. From 1 July to 31 December 2026 the route bans passenger vehicles of 9 seats and above and trucks from 6 axles, with everything else capped at 60 km/h and 30 km/h at Km50+700, while crews repair landslide damage from the heavy rain at the end of 2025. For a seven-seater it is legal but slow, it has no view, and it puts you into Huế from the wrong side. We rarely use it.

Most of our Huế days go north over the pass and come home through the tunnel. You see it once, in the good direction, and you do not spend the evening climbing it again in the dark.

What changed at Hải Vân Quan on 2 June 2026?

The gate at the summit — Hải Vân Quan, built in 1826 under Emperor Minh Mạng as the checkpoint guarding the road to the imperial capital — was restored and reopened to visitors on 1 August 2024, free of charge. That ended this year.

From 2 June 2026 the monument charges 70,000 VND per person per visit, applied identically to Vietnamese citizens and foreign visitors, with children under 1.2 m free. Tickets are electronic, and an AI camera system counts entries to support ticket control. The rate holds through 31 December 2028. The site sits exactly on the boundary between Đà Nẵng and Huế, which is why its management — and its ticket revenue — is a shared arrangement between the two cities rather than a single authority's.

Practical version: at roughly 2.70 USD a head this does not change anyone's budget, but it does change the stop. You now queue briefly, and the summit is a place you enter rather than a lay-by you photograph from. Budget 30 to 40 minutes rather than 15.

You can still pull in at the roadside viewpoints on the climb for free, and honestly the best light on the Đà Nẵng side is from those, not from the gate.

Where does this drive break?

The southern viewpoints, 10 minutes below the summit, looking back over Đà Nẵng bay and the long curve of Nam Ô. Five minutes, no ticket, and the coaches cannot stop there.

Hải Vân Quan at the top, now ticketed. Cold and wind-blasted more often than people expect — bring a layer even in August.

Đầm Lập An, the lagoon at Lăng Cô, 20 minutes down the northern side. Shallow, mountain-ringed, full of oyster frames. This is where we stop for lunch. The seafood is the honest reason to take the pass rather than the tunnel: from inside the tunnel you arrive at Lăng Cô too, but an hour earlier and without an appetite for it.

Suối Voi or the Cầu Hai lagoon edge on the run into Huế, if there is time and nobody is tired.

North of Lăng Cô the road runs through the Phước Tượng and Phú Gia tunnels — short, unremarkable, and the point at which most passengers fall asleep.

What do Huế's monuments cost in 2026?

Set by the city council for this year, and worth planning around because the combination tickets are the whole saving:

• Đại Nội (the Imperial City): 200,000 VND adult, 40,000 VND child
• Lăng Tự Đức: 150,000 VND, child 30,000 VND
• Lăng Khải Định: 150,000 VND
• Three-point route (Đại Nội plus two tombs): 420,000 VND
• Four-point route (Đại Nội, Minh Mạng, Tự Đức, Khải Định): 530,000 VND adult, 100,000 VND child aged 7–12
• All sites: 600,000 VND adult, 120,000 VND child

Combination tickets are valid for five days, which only helps if you are staying — another argument for the one-way transfer over the day trip. From 2026 the city also widened the categories of visitor eligible for free or reduced entry.

The tombs are spread out. Khải Định and Tự Đức are 20 and 15 minutes from the Citadel in different directions, Minh Mạng another 20 beyond. Four points in one afternoon is possible only with a car waiting at each gate.

What is on in Huế this autumn?

Festival Huế 2026 runs as a year-round programme of around 80 events, and its autumn season covers August and September. Inside the next few weeks: Lễ hội Điện Huệ Nam on 20–22 August, one of the city's great folk-belief festivals, centred on the temple on Ngọc Trản hill above the Hương River. Then a National Day arts programme on 2 September on the Hai Bà Trưng walking street in Thuận Hóa ward.

September brings traditional boat racing on the Hương, Ngày hội Lân Huế 2026, a lân-sư-rồng (lion, unicorn and dragon) parade with the Trung Thu lantern procession, and Tuồng Huế – Ngàn xưa âm vọng. Festival days mean riverside road closures around the Citadel and the walking street; if you are arriving on one, we drop on the far bank and walk you in rather than sit in a diverted queue.

When should you leave Hội An?

07:30 for a one-way transfer with three stops — summit by 09:15, lagoon lunch at 11:30, Huế hotel by 14:30 with the afternoon intact.

07:00 for a day trip, and accept the arithmetic: about six hours in the car for four hours in Huế, home around 20:00.

08:30 is fine for a straight tunnel transfer with no sightseeing.

In the wet months from October the pass gets fog above 300 m and the sensible call is often made at the foot of the climb, not the night before. Your driver will make it, and take the tunnel instead — same arrival time, different day.
