Hoi An to Da Nang 2026: The Three Roads Across 30 km, and Where a Car Can Stop

Hội An and Đà Nẵng are 30 km apart and, since 1 July 2025, legally the same city. There are three roads between them: a beach road that bans heavy trucks by day, an inland road through Điện Ngọc, and Quốc lộ 1 through Vĩnh Điện. Which one you get changes the drive by twenty minutes and the whole feel of it — and neither end lets a car stop where you think.

This is the shortest important drive we make, and the one people plan least — thirty kilometres, once or twice a day, in both directions, carrying guests from a beach hotel to a lantern street and from either to a flight.

It is also the drive where the map lies most. Thirty kilometres reads like half an hour. It is forty to sixty minutes, and which end of that range you get depends on a choice your driver makes three or four kilometres before you would notice anything.

How far is Hội An from Đà Nẵng, really?

About 30 km centre to centre — Đà Nẵng's riverfront to the edge of the Hội An heritage grid. Two of the three roads hold close to that figure; the third does not.

Reckon on 40 to 50 minutes on the beach road with clear traffic, 50 to 60 on the inland road, an hour or more on Quốc lộ 1. Then add the local peaks: 7am to 8am and 5pm to 6:30pm, when school and factory traffic thickens, costs another fifteen to twenty minutes. In late September and October a heavy afternoon of rain does the same again.

What are the three roads?

The beach road. Out of Đà Nẵng on Võ Nguyên Giáp, which becomes Trường Sa, then Lạc Long Quân — signposted ĐT603B — south behind the dune line past the resort strip, then onto ĐT619 (Võ Chí Công) and in over the Cửa Đại end of town. Open, four lanes for most of it, sea on your left through the gaps. The pretty one, and usually the fast one.

The inland road. Out of the south of the city onto ĐT607 through Điện Ngọc and Điện Dương. Narrower, busier, lined with workshops and schools and the everyday life of the corridor. Slower by ten minutes, and completely reliable in weather.

Quốc lộ 1 through Vĩnh Điện. South on the national highway for roughly 27 km, then left for about 10 km on ĐT608 into Hội An. Around 37 km, and the truck road. It exists for when the others are closed, for pickups from the west of the city, and for Bà Nà days that end in Hội An.

Why is the beach road quieter than a four-lane road should be?

Because it is protected by decision, not by luck. Đà Nẵng's traffic organisation for the coastal corridor — approved under Quyết định 1585/QĐ-UBND of 28 February 2025, with signage work announced on 14 January and starting 15 January 2026 — treats ĐT603B from Km0 to Km10+015 and ĐT619 from Km0 to Km6+405, just south of Cầu Cửa Đại, as one 16.42 km stretch with its own rules.

On it, tractor-trailers and semi-trailer combinations are banned outright. Trucks over 10 tonnes are banned from 5am to 10pm, and permitted overnight at no more than 50 km/h.

That is the whole explanation for how this road feels. Between five in the morning and ten at night, the heavy freight that defines Quốc lộ 1 is legally somewhere else. What is left is cars, resort shuttles and motorbikes on a wide, flat, well-drained road. For a guest in the back seat it reads as scenery. From the driver's seat it is why we choose it. South of Km6+405 the rules change again and ĐT619 runs on towards Tam Kỳ.

Hội An and Đà Nẵng are one city now. Does that change the drive?

On paper, entirely. Under Nghị quyết 1659/NQ-UBTVQH15, in force from 1 July 2025, Quảng Nam merged into Đà Nẵng and Hội An stopped being a city. It is now three wards: phường Hội An (Minh An, Cẩm Phô, Sơn Phong, Cẩm Nam plus Cẩm Kim, office at 09 Trần Hưng Đạo), phường Hội An Đông (Cẩm Châu, Cửa Đại, Cẩm Thanh) and phường Hội An Tây (Thanh Hà, Tân An, Cẩm An, Cẩm Hà), inside a city of 94 ward and commune-level units.

Two consequences on the road. Addresses given last year may name wards that no longer exist — streets and house numbers are unchanged, so give a driver the street, not the ward. And route planning across the old provincial boundary is now one authority's problem rather than two, which is why the coastal corridor could be regulated end to end.

Where does the car actually stop at each end?

This is the part that surprises people, and it is asymmetric. In Đà Nẵng, a car reaches the door almost anywhere — the riverfront, the beach hotels, Chợ Hàn, the bridges.

In Hội An, never. The protected core is closed to cars at every hour of every day, not on a timetable. Motorbikes are excluded on top of that during the walking-street windows — roughly 9am to 11am and 3pm to 9:30pm in summer, to 9pm in winter. Every arrival is a car to the ring, then a walk in.

Parking on that ring runs 20,000 to 50,000 VND per entry, more at peak. Larger vehicles use the yard at 97 Nguyễn Tất Thành opposite the silk village, 3 km out with room for roughly eighty; electric shuttles run in from the outer lots at about 20,000 to 30,000 VND a seat. If you are being collected in the evening, agree the pickup point when you are dropped off — not at 9:30pm, with three thousand other people at the same gap in the barrier.

Bus, Grab, or a booked car?

Bus route 01 links Bến xe Trung tâm Đà Nẵng to Bến xe Hội An for 8,000 to 18,000 VND, 18,000 for the full run, roughly 5:30am to 6pm at twenty-minute headways. Genuinely cheap, genuinely slow, it drops at the bus station rather than the town, and it stops before the evening you came for. A 48-hour city pass is 250,000 VND, or 125,000 VND for residents of Đà Nẵng, Quảng Nam and Huế.

Grab has run fixed pricing on the first 30 km of this route since 24 April 2024, and typically shows 250,000 to 423,000 VND by car size and demand. It works well leaving Đà Nẵng, less well leaving Hội An after dark, when several hundred people request cars from inside a zone cars cannot enter.

A booked car buys what neither of the others sells: a vehicle already there, at a price agreed before the day, with the waiting included rather than metered. On a one-way transfer that matters less. On a day running Hội An to Marble Mountains to Sơn Trà and back, it is the whole difference.

When should you leave?

Northbound, for dinner in Đà Nẵng: leave Hội An by 4:30pm to be past the Cửa Đại end before the evening thickens, or wait until after 7pm for a clear road.

Southbound, to the Old Town: 3pm to 4pm puts you at the ring with daylight to spare and the lanterns coming on while you are already inside.

For a flight: two hours at the terminal before departure, plus the drive, plus fifteen minutes of margin — about 3 hours 15 minutes from the Hội An ring for an international departure.

The rain season runs roughly August to December, so from now through autumn: the inland road on a wet afternoon, and fifteen extra minutes in the plan.

Will there ever be a boat?

There was, once. The sông Cổ Cò ran from the Hàn river down to Hội An and carried the trade that made the port, before it silted shut. Reopening it has been on the books for years: current planning has a further 5.4 km of dredging at around 260 billion VND across 2026 to 2030, and a new cầu Phước Trạch — a 220 m bridge with 740 m of approaches — running 2026 to 2029, in a package put at more than 530 billion VND. The stubborn stretch is Km14 to Km19+456, from cầu Ông Tú out to the old city boundary.

Not this year, then, and not next. The answer to Hội An–Đà Nẵng is still one of three roads, and the good one is the one with no trucks on it.

good questions

How far is Hoi An from Da Nang?
About 30 km centre to centre. The beach road and the Điện Ngọc road both run close to 30 km; Quốc lộ 1 through Vĩnh Điện is longer at roughly 37 km, because it goes south past the turn and comes back east.
How long does it take to drive from Hoi An to Da Nang?
Forty to fifty minutes on the coast road with clear traffic, fifty to sixty on the inland road, and an hour or more on Quốc lộ 1. Add fifteen to twenty minutes for the 7am to 8am and 5pm to 6:30pm peaks, and more on a wet afternoon in October.
How much is the bus from Da Nang to Hoi An?
Route 01 between Bến xe Trung tâm Đà Nẵng and Bến xe Hội An charges 8,000 to 18,000 VND depending on where you board, with 18,000 VND for the full run. It operates roughly 5:30am to 6pm at about twenty-minute headways. A 48-hour city pass is 250,000 VND, or 125,000 VND for residents of Đà Nẵng, Quảng Nam and Huế.
How much is a Grab from Da Nang to Hoi An?
Commonly 250,000 to 423,000 VND depending on car size, time of day and surge. Grab has run fixed pricing on the first 30 km of this route since 24 April 2024, which removes most of the guesswork but not the surge at airport arrival banks or after the night market.
Can a car drive into Hoi An Old Town?
No. The protected core is closed to cars at every hour of the day. Motorbikes are additionally excluded during the walking-street windows, roughly 9am to 11am and 3pm to 9:30pm in the summer schedule and to 9pm in the winter one. Every arrival by car ends on foot or on an electric shuttle.
Where do cars park in Hoi An?
In lots on the ring outside the heritage grid, typically 20,000 to 50,000 VND per entry. Coaches and larger vehicles use the yard at 97 Nguyễn Tất Thành opposite the silk village, about 3 km out with room for roughly eighty vehicles. Electric shuttles run in from the outer lots at about 20,000 to 30,000 VND a seat.
Is Hoi An still in Quang Nam province?
No. Under Nghị quyết 1659/NQ-UBTVQH15, effective 1 July 2025, Quảng Nam merged into Đà Nẵng and Hội An stopped being a city. It is now three wards of Đà Nẵng — phường Hội An, phường Hội An Đông and phường Hội An Tây — inside a city of 94 ward and commune-level units.
Which road is best if it is raining?
The inland ĐT607 road through Điện Ngọc. The beach road takes wind and sand off the sea and drains slowly at the Cửa Đại end; Quốc lộ 1 collects the truck traffic that a wet day slows down. The middle road is the one that behaves in weather.
