Where should you stand? Five east-facing spots

An Bàng beach — 3 km north-east of the Old Town, facing due east with nothing between you and the horizon except the beached basket boats. Between 5 and 6 am it belongs to local joggers and swimmers. One warning we repeat to every guest: the lifeguard posts are unmanned until around 7 am and rip currents on this coast form without notice, so stay at ankle depth until the flags go up.

Cửa Đại estuary — 5 km east, where the Thu Bồn meets the sea. Stand on the bank at 4:45 am and the returning boats materialise out of the dark, basket boats shuttling the catch ashore because the water by the market is too shallow for the trawlers. The warmest light of the day happens here. The bigger version of this scene is the Duy Hải fish market just across the river mouth — the largest early market in Quảng Nam — and it peaks fast, so early beats perfect.

Cẩm Nam bridge, south side — 200 m from the Old Town. Cross, turn left along the embankment, and look back: the heritage rooflines sit on your left with the river bending east, aligned with the October-to-February sunrise bearings.

Cẩm Kim ferry pier — the wooden passenger ferry still crosses from the Nguyễn Hoàng wharf every 20–30 minutes (a road bridge replaced the car ferry in 2021), and the first boats move at dawn with the village commute. From the Cẩm Kim side you frame the Old Town against the eastern sky — the reverse of the shot everyone else takes.

Bạch Đằng quay — the 750-metre riverfront built in 1872, southern edge of the 30-hectare UNESCO zone. At 5 am it is close to deserted, and the picture is not the sun itself (it rises obliquely here) but the colour wash landing on the wooden shopfronts.

Which dawn runs are worth booking a car for?

Honest triage first: for Bạch Đằng, the Cẩm Nam bridge and even An Bàng, a bicycle is the better vehicle — silent, nothing to park, and the ride through dark rice fields is part of it. A car earns its place on three dawn runs:

• The fish-fleet run. Pickup at 4:30 am, at the Cửa Đại bank or the Duy Hải market before 5, and — this is the part a bicycle can't do — straight on to An Bàng for the post-sunrise swim window and breakfast, dry and sand-free in between.
• The Mỹ Sơn dawn run. Leave Hội An at 4:45–5:00 am, about an hour west, gates at opening, the Chăm towers in first light with the site nearly private. Your driver sleeps in the car park; you get the ruins before the heat and the buses.
• The Hải Vân start. Anyone driving to Huế should leave early enough to crest the pass in morning light — the pull-offs are empty, the haze is thinnest, and the whole day north opens up from there.

How do you actually plan the morning?
