Hoi An or Da Nang 2026: Which End of the 30 km Strip Your Days Should Start From

Since 1 July 2025 Hội An and Đà Nẵng have been one city, and the tourism figures are now pooled — in the first nine months of 2026 accommodation across the merged city served 15.86 million guests, who stayed an average of 1.84 nights. With a stay that short, the end of the 30 km strip your days start from decides more than anything else you book. Here is the drive-time arithmetic from both ends, which one wins the airport, and where a car can actually reach you.

The question arrives before the luggage is in the boot, usually phrased as a worry: we booked Đà Nẵng, was that a mistake? Or the reverse. We drive the 30 km between the two ends several times a day, in both directions, and the honest answer is that neither is a mistake — but one of them will cost you an extra hour in the car every single day, and which one depends entirely on what you came to see.

Here is the arithmetic we do in our heads when a booking form lands.

Are Hội An and Đà Nẵng still two different places?

Administratively, no. On 1 July 2025 Quảng Nam province and Đà Nẵng city merged into one city-level unit that kept the name Đà Nẵng — about 11,860 km² and a population above three million, 94 commune-level units under Nghị quyết 1659/NQ-UBTVQH15. The city of Hội An ceased to exist as a city; the Old Town is now phường Hội An, with phường Hội An Đông, phường Hội An Tây and xã Tân Hiệp — Cù Lao Chàm — around it.

That matters for one practical reason beyond the paperwork: the tourism statistics are pooled now, so you can no longer compare the two ends by numbers. What the merged figures do tell you is sobering. In the first nine months of 2026, accommodation across the city served an estimated 15.86 million guests, up 26.4 percent year on year, of which 7.73 million were international. Of 14.43 million overnight arrivals, the average stay was 1.84 nights. Under two nights. At that length, your base is not a matter of taste — it is most of your itinerary.

What does each end actually put within half an hour?

This is the only comparison that decides anything.

From Hội An. The Old Town is on foot — the 120,000 VND heritage ticket (80,000 VND for Vietnamese visitors) admits five sites from a list of more than twenty, with booths selling 07:30 to 21:30. An Bàng beach is 4 km and 10 to 12 minutes. Trà Quế herb beds, Thanh Hà pottery and the Cẩm Thanh water coconut are all inside fifteen minutes. Ngũ Hành Sơn, the Marble Mountains, sits almost exactly halfway to the city at roughly 20 km and 25 to 30 minutes, open 07:00 to 17:30, 40,000 VND for Thủy Sơn and 15,000 VND for the lift up.

From central Đà Nẵng. Mỹ Khê beach is ten minutes. The river core holds the Chăm sculpture museum at 60,000 VND and the Bảo tàng Đà Nẵng at 31 Trần Phú, which is free. Chùa Linh Ứng and the Sơn Trà peninsula are 25 to 30 minutes up the east shoulder. The Dragon Bridge breathes fire and water at 21:00, Friday to Sunday, a ten-minute walk from most river hotels. And the Marble Mountains are twenty minutes south — the one stop both ends share.

Which end wins the airport?

Đà Nẵng, and it is not close. Da Nang International sits inside the city, ten to fifteen minutes from the Hàn river. Hội An is 30 km and about 45 minutes door to door on the coastal road — nearer 35 minutes on a midnight run, and meaningfully longer through the 16:30 to 18:30 city rush.

On an ordinary mid-morning flight nobody notices the difference. On a 06:40 departure they notice it a great deal: from Hội An that is a 03:45 pickup, and from a river hotel in Đà Nẵng it is 04:45 with the same check-in. The airport itself is under pressure that makes margin worth having — T2 handled 6.81 million passengers in 2025 against a four-million design, and on 19 May 2026 work began on a 1,500-billion-VND expansion that adds 3,600 m² for a total of 21,085 m² and takes check-in desks from 54 to 85, lifting design capacity to 6 million a year, with completion staged across 2026 to 2030. Until that lands, peak-hour queues are real.

Where can the car actually reach you?

The asymmetry nobody mentions. Cars do not enter the Hội An heritage grid at any hour. Trần Phú, Nguyễn Thái Học and Bạch Đằng also run as pedestrian and non-motorised streets roughly 09:00 to 11:00 and 15:00 to 21:30, daily. A pickup in the Old Town means a perimeter corner — Nguyễn Huệ, Hoàng Diệu, the Bạch Đằng riverside — and five to eight minutes on foot from Chùa Cầu, which with two suitcases and a tired child is its own small event.

In Đà Nẵng the car reaches the door, every time, at every hour. If you are travelling with mobility limits, a lot of luggage or a schedule that cannot absorb a walk, that single fact outweighs most of what follows.

What does the day-trip map look like from each end?

The two maps barely overlap, and this is where most itineraries go wrong.

Hội An's half. Mỹ Sơn is 40 km and about an hour west — the dawn run leaves at 05:15 and has the towers almost to itself; tickets 250,000 VND for foreign visitors. Cù Lao Chàm only works from this end, because the boats leave Cửa Đại, and the season is roughly April to September. Tam Thanh and the southern coast road run from here too.

Đà Nẵng's half. Bà Nà and the Golden Bridge are 45 to 60 minutes inland at 1,000,000 VND for an adult cable-car ticket — against 75 to 90 minutes from Hội An, which is the single most commonly misjudged drive in the region. Sơn Trà, the Hải Vân Pass and Lăng Cô all hang off the north end. And Huế is roughly 100 km and 2 hours 15 from the city against 130 km and close to 3 hours from Hội An — on a day trip, that is 90 minutes of daylight you either spend at the Đại Nội or on the road.

Does the season change the answer?

It does, and for the next two months it changes it firmly toward the city. The calm sea runs roughly March to September; from October the northeast monsoon, gió mùa đông bắc, turns this coast choppy, and Đà Nẵng's beach management shortens its posted window to 07:30 to 17:30 from October to February. Sơn Trà lost an hour on 1 October, dropping to 07:30-17:30, so an autumn trip up the peninsula is now a mid-afternoon plan rather than a sunset one.

October and November also hold Hội An's flood window, when the Thu Bồn rises for a day or three. Transfers keep running — the coastal corridor sits higher than the riverside lanes — but Đà Nẵng is the base that keeps every day trip open in a wet week, because it is higher ground with the museums, the markets and the mountains all indoors or uphill.

So which end, honestly?

One to three nights, built around the Old Town. Hội An. The thing you came for is outside the door, and the two drives you will want — Mỹ Sơn and the Marble Mountains — are the two that are closer from here.

One to three nights, built around Bà Nà, Sơn Trà, Hải Vân or Huế. Đà Nẵng. Base in Hội An for this and you buy yourself ninety extra minutes in the car on each of them.

Any trip with a flight before 08:00 or after 22:00 on either end. Đà Nẵng for that night, whatever you do with the others.

Five nights or more. Split them, and put Hội An second. Moving once costs half a morning, and you arrive into the quieter end with the city's long drives already behind you — then the Old Town evenings are the last thing you remember instead of the first.

good questions

Should I stay in Hoi An or Da Nang?
If your trip is three nights or fewer and built around the Old Town, Mỹ Sơn and the beach, base in Hội An. If it is built around Bà Nà, Sơn Trà, the Hải Vân Pass, Huế or an early or late flight, base in Đà Nẵng. For five nights or more, split them: the two ends are 30 km and 40 to 50 minutes apart, so moving once costs you half a morning and buys you two different day-trip maps.
How far apart are Hoi An and Da Nang?
About 30 km, which is 40 to 50 minutes by car on an ordinary morning. There are three roads between them — the coastal road through Điện Ngọc and the beaches, the inland road, and Quốc lộ 1 through Vĩnh Điện. Since 1 July 2025 both ends are legally the same city, Đà Nẵng, under Nghị quyết 1659/NQ-UBTVQH15.
Is Hoi An or Da Nang closer to Da Nang airport?
Đà Nẵng, by a wide margin. The airport sits inside the city, roughly 10 to 15 minutes from the Hàn river hotels. Hội An is about 30 km and 45 minutes door to door — nearer 35 minutes on a midnight run, and longer through the 16:30 to 18:30 city rush. For a flight before 08:00 or after 22:00, that difference is the whole argument.
What is within 30 minutes of each base?
From Hội An: the Old Town on foot, An Bàng beach at 4 km and 10 to 12 minutes, Trà Quế and Thanh Hà, the Cẩm Thanh coconut water, and Ngũ Hành Sơn at roughly 20 km and 25 to 30 minutes. From central Đà Nẵng: Mỹ Khê beach at 10 minutes, the Chăm sculpture museum and Bảo tàng Đà Nẵng in the river core, chùa Linh Ứng on Sơn Trà at 25 to 30 minutes, and the Marble Mountains at about 20 minutes.
Which base is better for day trips to My Son, Ba Na and Hue?
They split cleanly. Mỹ Sơn is 40 km and about an hour from Hội An but roughly 70 km and 90 minutes from Đà Nẵng. Bà Nà reverses it — 45 to 60 minutes from the city, 75 to 90 minutes from Hội An. Huế is about 100 km and 2 hours 15 from Đà Nẵng against roughly 130 km and close to 3 hours from Hội An. Cù Lao Chàm only works from the Hội An end, because the boats leave from Cửa Đại.
Can a car drop you at your door in Hoi An Old Town?
No. Cars do not enter the heritage grid at any hour, and Trần Phú, Nguyễn Thái Học and Bạch Đằng run as pedestrian streets roughly 09:00 to 11:00 and 15:00 to 21:30. Drop-off is at the perimeter on Nguyễn Huệ, Hoàng Diệu or the Bạch Đằng riverside, five to eight minutes on foot from Chùa Cầu. In Đà Nẵng the car reaches the door.
Does the season change which base is better?
Yes. The calm sea runs roughly March to September, and from October the northeast monsoon turns this coast choppy — Đà Nẵng's beach management shortens its posted window to 07:30 to 17:30 from October to February. Sơn Trà drops from 07:30-18:30 to 07:30-17:30 on 1 October. October and November also hold Hội An's flood risk, and higher-ground Đà Nẵng is the wet-week base that keeps every day trip open.
How long do most people stay in Da Nang and Hoi An?
Short. Across the merged city in the first nine months of 2026, overnight guests averaged 1.84 nights each, on 14.43 million overnight arrivals out of 15.86 million accommodation guests in total. At under two nights the base choice is not a preference, it is most of your itinerary.
