Hoi An Creative Week 2026: The 28 August–2 September Window and the Holiday Roads Around It

Most festival weeks in Hội An are lunar. This one is not. Tuần lễ Sáng tạo Hội An 2026 — Hội An Creative Week — runs Friday 28 August to Wednesday 2 September, six fixed days built around the town's work as a creative heritage city, and it finishes on Quốc khánh, National Day. That combination is why we are writing about it early: the programme is genuinely worth planning a day around, and the roads it sits on are the busiest they get between the summer peak and the rains.

What exactly is Creative Week, and when does it open?

The 2026 theme is "Hành trình chạm Di sản, chạm Sáng tạo" — a journey that touches heritage, touches creativity. The stated aim is to connect heritage, traditional crafts and folk art with design, technology, education and contemporary creative practice, and it is one of the flagship activities of Hội An's creative-heritage-city agenda. Hội An joined UNESCO's Creative Cities Network in the crafts and folk art field in 2023; this week is what that designation looks like on the ground.

Opening ceremony: 7:30 pm, Friday 28 August, at Quảng trường Sông Hoài — the riverfront square at the An Hội bridge, the one you cross for the night market. The opening introduces the artisans, artists and creative collectives behind the year's work, launches the "Không gian nghệ thuật và sáng tạo Hội An" map — a digital directory of the town's creative ecosystem, from cultural spaces and craft villages to individual artisans — and runs an arts programme retelling the stories of the villages and folk forms themselves.

What actually happens during the six days?

The announced programme is broader than one ceremony:

• "Nghệ cả Làng" — a talks series on the craft villages and the people still working in them.
• "Làng nghề lên số" ("craft villages go digital") — practical training for artisans and village youth in social-media content, product photography and running an e-commerce stall. This is the least glamorous item on the list and probably the most consequential.
• "Chạm truyền thống" and "Chạm sáng tạo" — paired experience spaces, one for the traditional side, one for the contemporary.
• "Nối mạch Nghệ" — a performance series putting traditional and contemporary forms on the same stage.
• "Xuyên mạch Nghệ" — a GPS-based interactive challenge across the heritage sites, alongside QR and AI-assisted discovery tools.
• Exhibitions, hands-on craft workshops and folk games throughout.

Venues run from the Sông Hoài square and the Vườn tượng An Hội sculpture garden through the Ancient Town, the Hội An cinema, the museums, and out into the craft villages and creative spaces themselves. Detailed daily timings are published locally as the week approaches; treat the opening night and the final two days as the fixed points.

Why does the week close on 2 September?

Because it doubles as the local programme for the 81st anniversary of National Day (2 September 1945 – 2 September 2026). That has a direct consequence for anyone driving. The official holiday is 1 and 2 September, but with a swapped working day the public-sector break runs five continuous days, Saturday 29 August through Wednesday 2 September. Private employers take 2 September plus one of 1 or 3 September. In practice, from the Saturday onward you are sharing central Việt Nam with a national holiday migration — domestic flights full, the Đà Nẵng beach strip busy from mid-morning, and the coastal road between Đà Nẵng and Hội An slower in both directions from about 4 pm.

What else lands in the same week?

Two lunar dates sit right against the opening.

Wednesday 26 August is the 14th night of the lunar month — Đêm Rằm Phố Cổ, the monthly lantern night, when the heritage streets trade electric light for silk lanterns. Thursday 27 August is the full moon of the seventh lunar month, Vu Lan báo hiếu, the filial-piety observance. Vu Lan is not a public holiday and it changes nothing about opening hours, but it fills the pagodas and the roads to them through the morning and early evening — Chùa Phước Lâm, Chùa Chúc Thánh and the Cẩm Hà cluster all draw families, and the lane traffic around them is heavier than the map suggests.

Arrive Tuesday and you can take lantern night, Vu Lan and the Creative Week opening on three consecutive evenings without repeating yourself.

Which "Hội An" are the venues in?

Worth knowing before you type an address into a phone. Since 1 July 2025 Hội An is no longer a city of Quảng Nam: it was reorganised into three wards and one commune of Đà Nẵng — phường Hội An (the old Minh An, Cẩm Phô, Sơn Phong, Cẩm Nam and Cẩm Kim), phường Hội An Tây (Thanh Hà, Tân An, Cẩm An, Cẩm Hà), phường Hội An Đông (Cẩm Châu, Cửa Đại, Cẩm Thanh) and xã Tân Hiệp, which is Cù Lao Chàm. The Creative Week venue list uses these new names. The craft villages map onto them cleanly: Thanh Hà pottery and Trà Quế herb village in Hội An Tây, Kim Bồng carpentry across the river in phường Hội An, the Cẩm Thanh water-coconut palms in Hội An Đông.

How should you drive the week?

From the Old Town, everything on the village side is short: Thanh Hà about 3 km west, Trà Quế about 3 km north-east, Cẩm Thanh about 5 km east, Kim Bồng across the Thu Bồn by the road bridge that replaced the car ferry in 2021. None of those is more than ten minutes of driving; the reason to have a car is that a village workshop, a museum session and an evening on the square do not chain together on a bicycle in August heat.

From Đà Nẵng it is roughly 30 km and about 45 minutes on a normal evening, whether you come down the coastal road or Võ Chí Công. For the 7:30 pm opening, leave by 5:45 pm; on 1 and 2 September add another 20 minutes. From Đà Nẵng airport, same 45 minutes, and if you are flying out during the holiday window pad the departure run by half an hour rather than trusting the usual.

Drop-off reality has not changed: no car enters the heritage grid, at any hour. The pedestrian rules run roughly 9–11:30 am and 3–9 pm, but the streets are car-free regardless. On the opening night the perimeter drop sits further out than usual and the An Hội side fills first, so the practical move is to be set down on the Cẩm Nam or Nguyễn Phúc Chu approach and walk the last few hundred metres. Your driver waits outside the closure; you tell them a rough time and they are there.

What does entry cost?

The Ancient Town ticket is 120,000 VND, valid 24 hours, admitting you to five heritage sites of your choice. Children under 1 m are free, 1–1.4 m pay 50,000 VND. Booths sell from about 7:30 am to 9:30 pm in summer; heritage houses and assembly halls close around 5 pm, while the Chùa Cầu — the Japanese Covered Bridge — stays lit until about 9:30 pm. The outdoor Creative Week programme on the square and in the sculpture garden is free to walk into.

And if you miss the window?

The next lantern night is Thursday 24 September, the eve of Tết Trung thu. Further out, Hội An stages its first International Lantern Festival, "Hội An – Sắc màu di sản", 3–6 December 2026, with around fifteen large lantern installations planned across the square, the sculpture garden, the riverbank and several Old Town streets.
