Hoi An Cooking Classes 2026: What a Market Morning Costs and the Hours It Really Takes
A Hội An cooking class is really three things bolted together — a market, a boat or a garden, and two hours at a burner. Prices run from 300,000 VND to 59 USD depending on which version you booked. Here is what each one actually costs you in hours, where the car can and cannot follow, and why October and November are the months this becomes the best booking in town.

Nobody books a cooking class to learn to cook. They book it because it is the one morning of the trip where somebody walks you through a Vietnamese market and names what is on the tables — and then you eat lunch. Which is a good reason, and also why so many people end up in the wrong version of it: a four-hour package sold as two, a river boat when the river is high, or a taxi hunt at the end of a hot afternoon.
From the driver's seat a Hội An cooking class is three things stitched together — a market, a transfer and a burner — and the price is mostly for the first two.
What actually happens in a Hoi An cooking class?
The shape has barely changed in fifteen years, because it works. You meet at a market and someone names things for you: rau răm, tía tô, the four different rice papers, the tiny hard limes. You move — by boat, by minibus, or by the school's own transfer — out to a garden or a riverside kitchen. You cook for an hour and a half to two hours. You eat what you cooked.
The combined products that most hotels sell run to a published timetable: pickup at 08:30, the market at about 08:50, a basket boat in the water at 09:30, and cooking from 10:30, with the class itself running about 1.5 hours. There is an afternoon mirror of the same thing leaving at 14:30. The schools that run their own premises start earlier and skip the basket boat — Gioan, at 222/17 Lý Thường Kiệt, opens at 07:30 Monday to Wednesday and 08:00 Thursday to Sunday, and lists a menu of more than fifty dishes to choose from.
The lesson to take from those timings: the cooking is the short part. Budget four to five hours door to door for a half day, and closer to seven for a full one.
What does a cooking class in Hoi An cost in 2026?
Three price bands, and they buy genuinely different days.
- Local and village classes: 300,000 to 700,000 VND per person, about 11 to 27 USD, for three to four hours. At Trà Quế the herb-village packages — a farmer-for-a-day session or a class using the beds outside the door — run 200,000 to 500,000 VND, on top of the village's own 35,000 VND entry.
- Mid-range town schools: from about 530,000 VND per person, roughly 20 USD, which is where the Hội An Tây listings on the town's own creative-city portal begin. Gioan spans roughly 25 to 70 USD depending on the class, with one published rate of 930,000 VND per person, about 35 USD.
- The riverside schools, priced in dollars. Red Bridge, out at Cẩm Thanh, publishes 35 USD per person for the half day — a guided walk through the central market, a boat along the river, a herb-garden walk, two hours of hands-on cooking and lunch — and 59 USD for the deluxe full day, which swaps in the Trà Quế organic gardens and a village market, gives you three hours at the burners, and brings you back by boat. Both rates include a 1 USD transaction fee.
If you are pairing a class with the coconut forest, price the boat separately: the Bảy Mẫu site charges 30,000 VND admission and the basket boat itself is 200,000 to 300,000 VND per thúng, not per person. Two payments, two windows, and the second one surprises people.
Which market does yours start in?
This is the question that decides whether the morning is memorable or merely photogenic.
Chợ Hội An sits at the junction of Trần Phú and Nguyễn Huệ, with the main gate at 19 Trần Phú and entrances also from Hoàng Diệu, Bạch Đằng and Nguyễn Huệ. It opens from about 6am and runs to roughly 10pm; the hour that matters is 06:00 to 08:00, when the seafood is still moving and the aisles belong to people shopping rather than people photographing. By the time a 09:00 class walks in, it is a different, gentler, more commercial place.
Some operators solve this by leaving town entirely. Báo Quảng Nam has described a class that begins instead at chợ Cẩm Châu, a country market where the vegetables come off the fields and gardens next to it — the point being to show how produce here is grown and traded, not just sold. If your class offers a rural market start, take it. Same money, better morning.
Worth knowing what this sits inside: Quảng Nam's food and drink sector turned over roughly 1,200 tỷ đồng in 2023, about 40 percent up on 2019, and Hội An's own creative-city portal notes Tripadvisor has ranked the town's cooking-class products among its stand-out travel experiences worldwide. This is not a side activity here.
Where does the car actually stop?
Three fixed constraints, and they are the reason to have a driver rather than a series of hopeful taxis.
The market is inside the protected quarter. No car reaches the gate. The drop is on the perimeter — the Bạch Đằng riverfront end, Nguyễn Huệ or Hoàng Diệu — and the last two or three minutes are on foot.
You may not come back the way you went. A class that takes you out by boat and returns you by road ends somewhere other than where it started. Name the collection point out loud before you step out, and name a time.
Cẩm Thanh has no single gate. The channel road is one lane in practice with nowhere to turn a car around, and there is a string of landings along it, each with its own parking. The dock your school named is the dock you need.
Drive times, from us:
- Old Town to Cẩm Thanh (Red Bridge, the basket-boat landings): 4–5 km, 10–15 minutes
- Old Town to Trà Quế: 3 km, eight to ten minutes
- An Bàng beach to Trà Quế: 2 km, four or five minutes
- Central Đà Nẵng to Hội An: 30 km, about 45 minutes — so an 08:30 class means a 07:30 pickup, not an 08:00 one
- Đà Nẵng airport to Cẩm Thanh: 32 km, 45 to 55 minutes
Does this work in the rain?
Better than almost anything else in town, and the next two months are when that matters.
The rains build through October and November. The cooking is under a roof and runs regardless — this is the booking we move people onto when a beach day or a Cù Lao Chàm crossing comes off. What the weather touches is the transfer: a school reached by river boat, or a class sold with a basket boat attached, can be paused for a day on high water. The mangrove is at its most beautiful in exactly those months, heavy green and half empty; it is the boats, not the scenery, that make the call.
So in the wet half of the year, book the version that can be driven to and treat any boat leg as a bonus your driver confirms on the morning. In the dry half, take the boat — the run out through the palms is the best twenty minutes of the day.
What does it pair with?
A half-day class is a morning, not a day. Three pairings that work without doubling back:
- Class, then An Bàng. The beach is five minutes from Trà Quế. Cook at nine, swim at two.
- Class, then the Old Town at dusk. You arrive already fed, which removes the worst restaurant hour of the day.
- Airport day. A morning class in Cẩm Thanh puts you 45 to 55 minutes from the terminal in the right direction, which turns a wasted last day into the best one.
One quiet rule, learned the hard way: do the class early in the trip, not late. Everything you learn to name at the market on day two — the herbs, the papers, the sauces — you then get to order for the next fortnight.
If you want that morning driven rather than assembled at a kerb — dropped on the right side of the quarter, the car waiting at the landing your school actually uses, the beach afterwards — tell us the dates at hoiandriver.com/quote. A real driver prices the trip, and one click books it, with nothing to pay now.
good questions
- How much is a cooking class in Hoi An in 2026?
- Local classes of three to four hours generally run 300,000 to 700,000 VND per person, roughly 11 to 27 USD. Village packages at Trà Quế sit at 200,000 to 500,000 VND. The larger riverside schools price in dollars: Red Bridge publishes 35 USD for the half day and 59 USD for the deluxe full day, and Gioan spans roughly 25 to 70 USD depending on the class, with one published rate of 930,000 VND per person.
- How long does a Hoi An cooking class take?
- Plan on four to five hours door to door for a half day. The cooking itself is only 1.5 to 2 hours; the rest is the market, the transfer by boat or road, a garden walk, and eating what you made. A deluxe full day with three hours at the burners runs closer to seven.
- What time do Hoi An cooking classes start?
- The standard combined product runs two departures: a morning pickup around 08:30 with the market at about 08:50, the boat at 09:30 and cooking from 10:30, and an afternoon mirror leaving at 14:30. Market-first classes at the schools themselves start earlier, from about 07:30.
- Which market does a Hoi An cooking class use?
- Most use chợ Hội An at the Trần Phú and Nguyễn Huệ junction, open from about 6am with entrances also on Hoàng Diệu and Bạch Đằng. Some operators deliberately avoid it: one Hội An class begins at chợ Cẩm Châu, a country market where the produce comes off the fields beside it rather than through a wholesaler.
- Can a car drop you at the Hoi An market?
- Not at the door. The market sits inside the protected quarter, so the car stops on the perimeter — the Bạch Đằng riverfront end, Nguyễn Huệ or Hoàng Diệu — and the last two or three minutes are on foot. Agree the collection corner before you get out, because the school's boat may not return you to the side you started on.
- Is a cooking class worth doing in the rainy season?
- It is the best wet-month booking in Hội An. The cooking is under a roof and the class runs in rain. What the weather touches is the transfer: classes reached by river boat or paired with a basket-boat ride can be paused for a day on high water, so in October and November book the version that can be driven to.
- Do you need to book a Hoi An cooking class in advance?
- For the riverside schools, yes — they run fixed departures with a boat attached and fill in high season. Small classes can often take you the same morning. Either way, tell your driver which school before the day starts; there are several landings in Cẩm Thanh and arriving at the wrong one costs fifteen minutes, not two.
- What dishes do you actually cook?
- The usual set is bánh xèo, gỏi cuốn or bánh cuốn, a broth, and something sweet — with the local specialities of cao lầu, mì Quảng or the herb-village tam hữu appearing where the class is attached to a garden. One Hội An school lists a menu of more than fifty dishes to choose from.
