Da Nang Fireworks (DIFF) 2026: Every Night's Schedule and the Hoi An Car Plan

Six Saturdays every summer, Đà Nẵng stages the biggest fireworks competition in Southeast Asia over the Hàn River — and every one of those Saturdays, cars roll north out of Hội An in the late afternoon and roll back south before midnight. We drive this night often enough to have it down to a routine. What is DIFF, and how did the 2026 season line up?

The Đà Nẵng International Fireworks Festival (Lễ hội pháo hoa quốc tế Đà Nẵng) pits national pyrotechnic teams against each other head-to-head: two teams a night, each firing a themed show of roughly 20–22 minutes synchronised with lasers, LED projection and a live soundtrack across both riverbanks. The 2026 edition — themed "United Horizons" (Đà Nẵng – Những chân trời kết nối) — ran ten teams from nine countries and territories across five qualifying Saturdays and a grand final, with Vietnam fielding two squads: the host Đà Nẵng team and Z121 Vina Pyrotech. Everything fires from the Hàn River port stretch off Bạch Đằng street, always at 8 pm.

The final pairing is never knowable in advance — it is decided on cumulative scores — which is why honest pre-season guides list it exactly that way. DIFF returns each summer with a new theme and card, announced in spring; the logistics below barely change from year to year.

Can you see it from Hội An, or do you have to go?

You have to go. The firing point sits about 30 km north of Hội An and the show does not read across that distance — at best you might catch a smudge of glow on the horizon, which is not the event. The honest good news: the drive is short. On an ordinary evening the Hội An–Hàn River run takes 40–50 minutes up the coastal road, and a fireworks night only demands that you respect one fact about the city: from around 4 pm on show days, Đà Nẵng closes the riverfront streets to traffic.

How does the car plan actually work?

The closures are the whole puzzle. No car — anyone's car — reaches the riverfront after late afternoon, so the plan that works has three fixed points:

Leave Hội An by 4:30–5:00 pm. That lands you in Đà Nẵng before the closed zone hardens, with time to be dropped at its edge and walk in unhurried. Aiming to arrive at 7:45 pm is how people end up watching the opening barrage from a traffic queue.

Agree the pickup corner before you get out. The drop-off is easy; the return is the part that rewards planning. A good driver names a corner a few blocks inland from Bạch Đằng — outside the pedestrianised core, reachable by car from the landward side — and is parked there before the finale. When the last shell fades, the entire crowd moves at once; ride-hail apps surge, and cars summoned into the crush take a long time to arrive and longer to escape. A known car at a known corner is the difference between a 9:40 pm departure and a 10:45 pm one.

Expect a slower road south. DIFF nights are Saturdays, so the coastal road back to Hội An carries weekend traffic on top of the festival exodus. Even so, an early dinner in Hội An, the show at 8, and the riverside dark of the Old Town again by late evening is a completely comfortable shape for the night.

If you skip the booked car: Grab up works fine with an early start, but for the return, walk 15–20 minutes away from the river before opening the app, and budget for surge pricing. A rented motorbike is what many locals do; for a visitor, 30 unfamiliar kilometres in the dark at the end of a long, loud evening is the version of the night we talk people out of.

Where should you stand once you're there?

Free viewing lines both banks: Bạch Đằng street on the west side, Trần Hưng Đạo on the east, plus the Dragon Bridge (Cầu Rồng), the Hàn River Bridge (Cầu Sông Hàn) and Thuận Phước Bridge further downstream. All of it fills long before 8 pm — a free spot is claimed in daylight, not at 7:50. Ticketed grandstands sell in tiers, from roughly 1,000,000 VND on regular nights and higher for the opener and the final, with the premium sections asking spectators to check in before 7:30 pm. The third route, and a comfortable one for families: a riverside restaurant table or a Hàn River dinner cruise booked ahead, which fixes your sightline and your dinner in one decision. Anywhere with a clean look down the water toward the bridges sees the whole show.

Which night should you pick?

Any qualifier delivers the full two-team duel. The opener and the grand final carry the biggest production and the biggest crowds and prices; the mid-season Saturdays are noticeably easier to move around. If your Hội An dates overlap several nights, take a mid-bracket Saturday for elbow room — the pyrotechnics are competition-grade on all of them.
