Da Nang or Hue Airport 2026: Phú Bài, DAD, and the 100 km That Decides Your First Day
Two airports serve the north end of this coast and the booking engines rarely explain the difference. Đà Nẵng International is the long-haul door with 18 regular international routes and 100 km of road to Huế. Phú Bài sits 13 to 15 km from the Huế citadel in a terminal built to look like the royal palaces, but it is a domestic airport in practice. Here is which one to fly into, what the 100 km between them really costs in hours, and what the November rain does to the road.

Two airports serve the north end of this coast, and the booking engines almost never explain the difference. Đà Nẵng International (DAD) is the one every search puts in front of you. Phú Bài (HUI), fifteen kilometres outside Huế, is the one that would have saved you two hours — or cost you a whole connection.
We drive both, in both directions, most weeks of the year. The choice is not really about airports. It is about a hundred kilometres of road, and what November rain does to it.
What are these two airports, actually?
Đà Nẵng is the long-haul door for central Vietnam. The city's own tourism portal counted 18 regular international routes at the end of 2025, connecting Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Taipei, Hong Kong, Incheon and Busan among others, and Báo Đà Nẵng has reported the city working through 2026 to add more. The volume is real: over the New Year holiday at the start of 2026, nearly 3,600 flights took off and landed at Đà Nẵng, with international arrivals running at 62 a day, up almost 13 percent year on year. If your flight is coming from outside Vietnam, this is overwhelmingly where it lands.
Phú Bài is a different animal. Its T2 terminal cost about 2,250 billion VND, was built by ACV with capacity for 5 million passengers a year — 4 million domestic and 1 million international — and handles 2,500 passengers at peak hour. Vietnam Airlines moved its Huế operations from T1 to T2 on 28 April 2023, and the terminal was inaugurated that June. It is a handsome building, designed around kiến trúc cung đình Huế, the architecture of the royal palaces, and the first ACV terminal to put digital processing across much of the passenger flow.
But read what it actually does rather than what it is called. It is Cảng hàng không quốc tế Phú Bài on the sign, and Vietnamese reporting through 2026 describes Huế promoting new routes and asking carriers for more service — the language of ambition, not of a timetable. In practice you reach Phú Bài by connecting through Hà Nội or Hồ Chí Minh City.
How far is each airport from where you are actually going?
This is the whole decision, and it is four numbers.
- Phú Bài to the Huế citadel: 13 to 15 km, 20 to 30 minutes.
- Đà Nẵng airport to Huế: 95 to 105 km, 2 to 2 and a half hours through the tunnel.
- Đà Nẵng airport to Hội An: 30 km, about 45 minutes.
- Phú Bài to Hội An: about 135 km, 3 to 3 and a quarter hours.
Phú Bài wins Huế by roughly two hours and loses Hội An by two and a half. If Huế is the entire trip, fly to Phú Bài. If Hội An appears anywhere on your itinerary, Đà Nẵng is not a compromise — it is the right airport, and the drive north becomes a day out rather than a transfer.
What does the 100 km between Đà Nẵng and Huế actually involve?
Three roads, and they are not equivalent.
The tunnel. Hầm Hải Vân is Vietnam's longest at 6.28 km, and a vehicle under 12 seats pays 110,000 VND at the Bắc Hải Vân station — a rate unchanged since 1 May 2021. Inside: 60 km/h, no overtaking, no reversing. Motorbikes are banned outright, and trucks over 10 tonnes, dangerous-goods vehicles and oversize loads are pushed back over the mountain, which is why the pass road always has lorries on it.
The pass. Đèo Hải Vân is free, open around the clock, 21 km of switchbacks to roughly 496 m, and worth 30 to 45 extra minutes on a clear day. Since 2 June 2026 the fort at the summit, Hải Vân Quan, has charged admission. On a wet November afternoon the summit sits inside cloud and the view you paid the time for is not there.
The expressway. La Sơn – Hòa Liên reads well on a map and badly in the regulations. From 1 July to 31 December 2026 it bans passenger vehicles of 9 seats and above and trucks from 6 axles, caps everything else at 60 km/h and at 30 km/h at Km50+700, while crews repair landslide damage from the heavy rain at the end of 2025. A seven-seater may legally use it, but it is slower, has no view, and delivers you into Huế from the wrong side.
Our default on an airport run is the tunnel northbound when there is a flight to catch, and the pass southbound when there is not.
What do November and December do to this road?
They reroute it. This is the part worth knowing before you book a November arrival.
Huế's rain peaks in October and stays heavy through November — travel climate sources put November's average somewhere around 340 to 375 mm against October's 478 to 530. The consequence is not usually a closed corridor. It is a redirected one.
The clearest recent example is the exceptional spell of 26 October to 3 November 2025. The Cục Đường bộ Việt Nam recorded Quốc lộ 1 flooded about 50 cm between Km808 and Km810 through Huế city and completely blocked, with further water at Km806 to Km810 at 0.3 to 0.6 m and at Km829 and Km867. The Bồ river passed its historic 2020 level, 32 of 40 wards and communes in the city flooded 1 to 3 m deep, and the Phú Mậu bridge came down at 05:30 on 3 November. Khu Quản lý đường bộ II and the traffic police ran a long-range diversion — hầm Hải Vân, Quốc lộ 1A, cao tốc Cam Lộ – La Sơn, back onto Quốc lộ 1A — with northbound traffic leaving the expressway at the Km101+200 junction.
Three readings of that. The mountain crossing is the resilient part; the flat ground north of it is what floods. The authorities publish diversions quickly, so your driver is following them rather than guessing. And a 2-hour transfer can become a 3-and-a-half-hour one in a bad week — an argument for an early flight out of Phú Bài, and against a tight DAD connection on a rain-forecast day.
Is the train a better idea than the car?
Better scenery, worse logistics. The rail distance is about 103 km, with roughly 11 services a day — the quickest a little under 2 hours 28, the slowest close to four, first departures around 02:01 and the last near 23:41. It hugs the coast around Hải Vân and is fairly called the country's most beautiful stretch of railway.
What it cannot do is stop. No Lăng Cô, no lagoon, no summit, no luggage to the door. Take the train once, in daylight, for its own sake; do not take it to make a flight.
When should the car leave, and where does it stop?
- Arriving at DAD, going to Huế: allow 3 hours door to door including the immigration queue, not 2. Landing after 20:00, go through the tunnel; the pass in the dark is a waste of the mountain.
- Departing from DAD, coming from Huế: leave Huế 5 hours before an international departure in the rain months, 4 in the dry. The corridor is reliable; the hour it needs is not always the hour you budgeted.
- Departing from Phú Bài: 15 km does not mean 15 minutes of margin. Leave central Huế 2 hours before a domestic departure.
- Drop-off reality: both airports drop at the terminal kerb without complication — a change from the Old Town. The awkward drop-off is in Huế itself, where citadel-side hotels sit on one-way lanes inside the walls; tell your driver the street, not just the hotel name.
Pick the airport your flight actually wants, then let the road be a day rather than a penalty. The pass summit, Lăng Cô and the Lập An lagoon all sit on these hundred kilometres, and a car driving it anyway can stop at every one.
If you want that hundred kilometres driven properly — tunnel one way, pass the other, lunch on the lagoon — tell us the flight numbers at hoiandriver.com/quote. A real driver prices the trip in USD, a 10% non-refundable deposit books it and holds your driver and your dates, and the balance is paid at the end of the trip.
good questions
- Should I fly into Da Nang or Hue?
- Fly into Đà Nẵng (DAD) if you are arriving from outside Vietnam, if Hội An is on your itinerary, or if your flight times are tight enough that you need options. Fly into Huế (Phú Bài, HUI) only if you are connecting through Hà Nội or Hồ Chí Minh City anyway and Huế is the whole trip. Phú Bài is 13 to 15 km from the Huế citadel against roughly 100 km from Đà Nẵng, and that gap is the entire argument for it.
- How far is Da Nang airport from Hue?
- Roughly 95 to 105 km depending on which road you take, and 2 to 2 and a half hours door to door through the Hải Vân tunnel with no stops. Over the Hải Vân pass instead, add 30 to 45 minutes. From Đà Nẵng city centre the figure usually quoted is 100 km and about 2 and a half hours.
- How far is Phu Bai airport from Hue city centre?
- Vietnamese travel sources put it at 13 to 15 km, 20 to 30 minutes in normal traffic. One outlier claims 25 km, which does not match the rest. Treat 15 km and half an hour as the working number and add time in the rain months, when the approach roads through Phú Bài and Hương Thủy take standing water.
- Is Phu Bai an international airport?
- It is named Cảng hàng không quốc tế Phú Bài and the T2 terminal was built with capacity for 1 million international passengers a year, but scheduled international service is thin and much of it is charter. Vietnamese reporting through 2026 describes Huế actively promoting new routes rather than operating a full international network. Plan on connecting domestically.
- What does the Hai Van tunnel cost in 2026?
- 110,000 VND for a vehicle under 12 seats, paid at the Bắc Hải Vân station. That rate has been unchanged since 1 May 2021. Motorbikes are not allowed through the tunnel at all, and trucks over 10 tonnes, dangerous-goods vehicles and oversize loads are sent over the pass instead.
- Can I use the expressway between Da Nang and Hue?
- Only partly, and probably not in your vehicle. From 1 July to 31 December 2026 the La Sơn - Hòa Liên expressway bans passenger vehicles of 9 seats and above and trucks from 6 axles, with everything else capped at 60 km/h and 30 km/h at Km50+700 while crews repair landslide damage from the heavy rain at the end of 2025. A seven-seater is legal on it but slow, and it has no view.
- Is the train from Da Nang to Hue better than a car?
- It is better scenery and worse logistics. The rail distance is about 103 km with roughly 11 services a day, the quickest a little under 2 and a half hours and the slowest close to 4, with first departures around 02:01 and the last near 23:41. It is widely called the most beautiful stretch of Vietnamese railway. But it runs station to station, not door to door, and it cannot stop at Lăng Cô or the pass summit.
- Does the road to Hue flood in November?
- It can, and November is the month to plan for it. In the exceptional rain of 26 October to 3 November 2025 the Cục Đường bộ Việt Nam recorded Quốc lộ 1 flooded about 50 cm deep between Km808 and Km810 through Huế city and fully blocked, with further standing water at Km806 to Km810 at 0.3 to 0.6 m and at Km829 and Km867. Traffic was diverted on a long-range plan through the Hải Vân tunnel, Quốc lộ 1A and the Cam Lộ - La Sơn expressway. The corridor keeps working; it reroutes.
