Da Nang Museum 2026: The 125-Year-Old Toa Doc ly, the Ticket, and the Hours Nobody Updated
Bảo tàng Đà Nẵng moved out of a citadel and into the old French mayor's office at 42 Bạch Đằng. What the ticket costs now, why half the internet still prints the wrong opening hours, and why this is the stop a driver reaches for when October takes the afternoon.

There is a particular kind of October afternoon on this coast. You leave Hội An at eight in brilliant light, and by one o'clock the sky over the Hàn River has gone the colour of wet cement and the Bà Nà cable car is running up into cloud that will give you nothing. A driver who has worked a few wet seasons does not improvise at that point. He already knows which stops are under a roof, which of them are worth ninety minutes, and — this is the part the internet keeps getting wrong — which of them are actually open.
Bảo tàng Đà Nẵng is now the best answer on that list, and it is also the one most likely to be described incorrectly on the page you found it on.
What is Bảo tàng Đà Nẵng, and why did it move?
Until recently the city museum sat inside Thành Điện Hải, the citadel at 24 Trần Phú built in 1813 under Gia Long, the ground where Nguyễn Tri Phương commanded the defence of Đà Nẵng against the French in 1858. A museum block had been put up on the citadel's own foundations, which is roughly like parking a shed in a cathedral. The city ranked the citadel a national special relic, demolished the museum building standing on it, and moved the collection out.
It moved into something equally historic. 42 Bạch Đằng was the Tòa Đốc lý — the French mayor's office, later Đà Nẵng's city hall — a neoclassical building drawn by a French architect, begun in 1898 and completed in 1900. By the time the conversion finished it was 125 years old. The project ran close to four years, cost more than 504 billion VND, and spread across 8,686 m² of the Bạch Đằng and Trần Phú block. The museum was inaugurated on 28 March 2025 and opened its doors to visitors on 1 April 2025.
So the city now has two things where it used to have a compromise: a working riverfront museum, and a citadel being restored back into a citadel. Phase two of the Thành Điện Hải restoration has been running to a Q4 2026 completion target — meaning the fence next door may well come down in the weeks around this article.
What does the ticket cost in 2026?
It opened free, and that confused everybody. Charging began on 3 July 2025 under Nghị quyết 10/2025/NQ-HĐND:
| Visitor | Fee |
|---|---|
| Vietnamese and foreign visitors | 50,000 VND (about 1.90 USD) |
| Đà Nẵng residents; university, college and vocational students | 20,000 VND |
| Under-16s and school pupils; Vietnamese aged 60+; people with a disability certificate; cultural-policy beneficiaries; diplomatic guests | Free |
The resident rate did what it was meant to: in the first 15 days of ticketing the museum counted over 13,000 visitors, with locals filling the weekends.
Then the council rewrote the whole schedule. Nghị quyết 47/NQ-HĐND of 29 May 2026, effective 10 June 2026, set fees across the museum group — 60,000 VND at the Bảo tàng Điêu khắc Chăm, 40,000 VND at the Bảo tàng Mỹ thuật Đà Nẵng at 78 Lê Duẩn, and 20,000 VND at Cơ sở 2. The notices that accompanied it named the Fine Arts Museum and Cơ sở 2 as the sites changing; the main museum's 50,000 VND stands. Tickets are sold at the gate; nothing here needs booking ahead.
The city also waives admission on a short list of days — the first day of Tết, the city's liberation day on 29 March, Giỗ Tổ Hùng Vương, and National Day on 2 September. That list is set year by year rather than standing, and a free day is a crowded day.
Why do sources disagree about the opening hours?
Because the hours changed and most pages never caught up. For its first three months the museum ran the cautious opening timetable: Tuesday to Saturday, mornings 08:00-11:30 with the door shut to new visitors after 11:00, afternoons 14:00-17:00. That is still what you will read on a great many blogs, and on some aggregator listings, in October 2026.
The city's own notice, published with the July 2025 ticket change, gives the current shape: 08:00 to 17:00, daily, at the 31 Trần Phú gate. The Fine Arts Museum at 78 Lê Duẩn runs the same hours; Cơ sở 2 keeps a split day, 07:30-11:30 and 13:30-16:30.
From the driver's seat the practical rule is the one that survives both versions. Arrive between 08:30 and 10:30, or from 14:30. Treat 16:00 as the last honest entry — you want an hour inside, not a lap. And if your only possible day is a Monday, that is the one worth a phone call before the car leaves Hội An, because a shuttered door at the end of a 30 km drive is a bad way to spend an afternoon.
What is actually inside?
Three exhibition floors, nearly 3,000 documents and objects chosen from a holding of about 27,000, arranged under nine major themes: a photographic overview of the city; the nature and people of Đà Nẵng; the history of the city as a city; the struggle for national independence; a thematic section on the vestiges of war; Đà Nẵng's integration and development; and cultural diversity, including the upland communities now inside the city's boundaries.
The presentation is unusually modern for a provincial museum — 3D mapping projections, documentary film, image sequences — and there is an AI guide robot that talks, answers questions and leads visitors between galleries, with multilingual support being extended. Children find it before you do.
It pairs rather than competes with the Bảo tàng Điêu khắc Chăm, 1.5 km south at the foot of Cầu Rồng. That museum holds the stone of the Chăm centuries; this one holds the city that came afterwards — the port, the colonial administration, the war, the rebuilding. Doing both in one day is a genuinely good rainy-day plan and costs 110,000 VND a head.
Where can the car actually stop?
The address is two addresses: 42-44 Bạch Đằng on the riverfront, 31 Trần Phú one block inland. Visitors are received at the Trần Phú gate — that is where your driver should aim, and getting it wrong means a walk around the block in rain.
- Hội An Old Town: about 30 km, 40-55 minutes
- Đà Nẵng airport: 3-4 km, 10-15 minutes
- Marble Mountains: about 11 km, 20-25 minutes
- Bảo tàng Điêu khắc Chăm: 1.5 km, under 10 minutes
- Cơ sở 2 at Tam Kỳ: roughly 50 km south of Hội An, about an hour
Bạch Đằng is the riverfront promenade street and a poor place to open a door; the Trần Phú side is the working kerb. This is central Hải Châu, so there is no parking bay belonging to the museum and nowhere for a car to simply sit for ninety minutes. In practice your driver drops at the gate, parks a few streets back or waits near Chợ Hàn, which is a three-minute walk away, and comes back to the same gate on a phone call. If you are stacking the market, the museum and the Chàm museum into one wet afternoon, that short riverfront triangle is why it works.
The airport figure is the one worth remembering. Ten minutes from the terminal, open until five, mostly indoors: a 10:40 landing with a hotel room that is not ready until 14:00 turns into an hour of the city's own story instead of an hour in a lobby with your luggage.
If you want this afternoon driven — the Trần Phú gate, the Chàm stone afterwards, and someone watching the sky so the plan changes before the rain does — tell us the day at hoiandriver.com/quote. A real driver prices the trip, a 10 percent deposit books it, and the balance is settled in USD at the end of the trip.
good questions
- Where is the Da Nang Museum?
- At 42-44 Bạch Đằng and 31 Trần Phú, Hải Châu, on the west bank of the Hàn River about a kilometre north of the Dragon Bridge. Visitors are received at the 31 Trần Phú gate, not on the riverfront side.
- How much is the Da Nang Museum ticket in 2026?
- 50,000 VND per person, roughly 1.90 USD, the same for Vietnamese and foreign visitors. Đà Nẵng residents and students at universities, colleges and vocational schools pay 20,000 VND. Charging resumed on 3 July 2025 under Nghị quyết 10/2025/NQ-HĐND after a free opening period.
- Who gets into Da Nang's museums free?
- Children under 16 and school pupils, Vietnamese citizens aged 60 and over, people with a disability certificate, beneficiaries of cultural-access policies, and diplomatic guests. The city also waives admission on a short list of major days, including the first day of Tết, the city's liberation day on 29 March, Giỗ Tổ Hùng Vương and National Day on 2 September.
- What are the Da Nang Museum opening hours?
- The city's own notice, issued with the July 2025 ticket change, gives 08:00 to 17:00 daily at 31 Trần Phú. Older pages still carry the opening-period timetable — Tuesday to Saturday, closed 11:30 to 14:00. Treat 16:00 as the last honest entry and do not build a Monday around it without checking.
- Is the Da Nang Museum worth visiting?
- If you want the city rather than the beach, yes. Nearly 3,000 objects selected from a 27,000-piece holding, across three floors and nine themes, inside a neoclassical building begun in 1898 — and almost all of it under roof, which matters between September and December.
- How long does the Da Nang Museum take?
- Ninety minutes is the honest figure for the three floors at a walking pace. An hour covers the urban-history and war-vestiges sections if that is all you want. Families with the guide robot should budget two hours.
- How far is the Da Nang Museum from Hoi An?
- About 30 km, 40 to 55 minutes depending on the hour and the weather. From Đà Nẵng airport it is 3 to 4 km, 10 to 15 minutes, which makes it the best filler we know for an arrival day with a room that is not ready until 14:00.
- What is the Da Nang Museum Co so 2 in Tam Ky?
- The former Bảo tàng Quảng Nam at 281 Phan Bội Châu, phường Bàn Thạch. Since Quảng Nam and Đà Nẵng merged it is Bảo tàng Đà Nẵng - Cơ sở 2, and from 10 June 2026 it charges 20,000 VND under Nghị quyết 47/NQ-HĐND. Hours there are 07:30-11:30 and 13:30-16:30.
