Da Nang Cruise Port 2026: Shore Hours from Tien Sa, and What Actually Fits

The central Vietnam cruise season reopens in October. Which berth your ship takes — Tiên Sa in Đà Nẵng or Chân Mây in Huế — decides your whole day ashore. Real drive times, the order that works, and where a car can actually meet you.

From the road, you can tell the season has turned before anyone announces it. Sometime in October the white hulls come back to the Sơn Trà side of the bay, and the coast road south fills at nine in the morning with coaches that were not there in September. Cruise passengers are the most time-pressured people we drive. They have one day, a gangway with a deadline on it, and usually no idea that the port they are docking at is not in the city they were sold.

Here is the shore day as it looks from the driver's seat.

When does the central Vietnam cruise season actually run?

The international season conventionally opens in October and runs through to April, tracking the dry months and the flatter sea. Vietnamese trade coverage put the national outlook for 2026 at close to 90 international cruise calls across the country's ports, with central Vietnam taking its share at two berths rather than one.

The clustering matters more than the total. Calls come thick around the Lunar New Year window: over the Tết Bính Ngọ period this February, from the 16th to the 22nd, Đà Nẵng logged close to 4,200 cruise arrivals in a single week, and on the 19th the Adora Mediterranea came alongside at Chân Mây with 2,613 passengers and 732 crew. That is what a peak day looks like on the ground — several thousand people trying to leave one gate in the same hour.

There is an honest wrinkle about October specifically. The season opens before the rain finishes. October and November are the flood-risk weeks on the Hội An plain, which means an early-season call is the one where the morning weather judgement counts for most.

Tiên Sa or Chân Mây: which berth is yours, and why does it change the day?

Two berths serve the same three destinations: Huế, Đà Nẵng, Hội An. Which one your ship takes is set by the line long before you plan anything ashore, and it changes everything.

Cảng Tiên Sa, Đà Nẵng. On the Sơn Trà peninsula, roughly 10 km from the city centre. Natural deep water with a maximum depth around 12 m, about 965 m of quay across two finger piers and one alongside berth, rated for passenger vessels up to roughly 75,000 GRT. National port planning has Tiên Sa converting gradually into a dedicated passenger and cruise berth — a bến cảng du lịch — after 2030, as the new Liên Chiểu port north of the city absorbs the container traffic. For now it is still a working cargo port with a cruise berth in it, which is exactly why the pickup arrangements are stricter than people expect.

Cảng Chân Mây, Huế. North of Hải Vân, a first-tier hub port described in Vietnamese port coverage as one of 46 stopovers the Asian Cruise Association selected for Southeast Asian itineraries. It takes the bigger hulls — passenger ships of around 100,000 GRT, the largest in central Vietnam. Lăng Cô and the Lập An lagoon are five minutes from the gate.

If your ticket says Chân Mây and your heart says Hội An, read the next two sections carefully.

How far is Hội An from the cruise terminal, really?

Real numbers, the ones we drive rather than the ones a map estimates.

From Tiên Sa:

  • Chùa Linh Ứng Bãi Bụt, the Lady Buddha on Sơn Trà — about 6 km, 12 to 15 minutes. The closest sight of any size to your ship.
  • Đà Nẵng centre and the Dragon Bridge — about 10 km, 20 minutes.
  • Ngũ Hành Sơn, the Marble Mountains — about 17 km, 30 minutes, and directly on the way to Hội An.
  • Hội An Old Town — about 40 km, 55 to 65 minutes down the coastal corridor.
  • Bà Nà and the cable car station — about 35 km, 55 to 70 minutes.
  • Mỹ Sơn — about 65 km, an hour and a half.

From Chân Mây:

  • Lăng Cô and Lập An — 5 minutes.
  • Huế and the Đại Nội — about 50 km, an hour.
  • Đà Nẵng — about 65 km, an hour and a quarter through the Hải Vân tunnel.
  • Hội An — 95 to 100 km, two hours to two and a quarter.

What fits in an eight-hour call from Tiên Sa?

Most calls run something like 07:00 or 08:00 alongside to 17:00 or 18:00 away, and after the gangway formalities you have roughly eight hours of usable shore time. Hội An costs two of them in driving. Five remain.

The order that works, and it is an order, not a list:

Clear the gate as early as they will let you. Ngũ Hành Sơn first, because it opens at 07:00 and empties before the coaches arrive — 40,000 VND for Thủy Sơn, the elevator 15,000 VND one way if the 156 steps are not the point of your morning, and 75 minutes is enough. Then straight south on the coast road and into Hội An by about 10:00. The Old Town ticket booths open from 07:30 at 120,000 VND for foreign visitors, good for five heritage sites. Three hours of walking with lunch inside it. Back in the car by 14:30, alongside by 15:30, and you are holding 90 minutes of margin against the ship's clock.

What does not fit, no matter how it is sold: Bà Nà and Hội An in the same call. Bà Nà alone is five to six hours before the drive. Mỹ Sơn and Hội An together is the same problem in a different direction unless your call runs past eleven hours. Pick one. A cruise day with one fewer stop than you wanted is the one you will remember kindly.

Can you reach Hội An from Chân Mây?

You can, and some days you should, but do the arithmetic first: four to four and a half hours of the day spent driving, out of eight. That leaves three hours in the Old Town and no slack at all.

From Chân Mây, Huế is the honest answer — an hour each way, the Đại Nội and one tomb, or the Đại Nội and a Perfume River stretch. And take the tunnel, not the pass. The Hải Vân Pass is the better drive by a wide margin and we will argue for it on any day that is not a ship day; on a ship day it is 40 minutes slower and, in October and November, frequently sitting inside cloud. The tunnel is the route that gets you back.

Where does the car actually meet you at the port gate?

Tiên Sa is a commercial port with a cruise berth, not a terminal promenade. Private vehicles wait at the designated pickup area rather than at the foot of the gangway, and on the bigger calls the ship runs its own shuttle from the ship's side out to the gate. So the meeting point is the gate, and the useful information to hand your driver is not "morning" but three things: the ship's name, the alongside time, and the all-aboard time.

All-aboard, incidentally, not departure. It is usually 30 minutes earlier than the time people have in their heads, and it is the only deadline that exists. An independent car gives you a better day than a coach in almost every respect except one: the ship does not wait for it. Which is why the margin is the product. We build the return leg with 90 minutes of slack and drive to a hard turnaround time, and on a wet-season morning we make one more call with you — whether the last few hundred metres into a low Hội An lane are drivable, or whether the car stops a block short and you walk in on dry stone.

If your ship calls at Tiên Sa or Chân Mây this season and you would rather have the day built around your all-aboard time than around a coach schedule, send us the ship and the dates at hoiandriver.com/quote. A real driver prices the trip, a 10% deposit holds the car and the date, and the balance is settled at trip end in USD.

good questions

When does the Da Nang cruise season start?
Vietnam's international cruise season conventionally opens in October and runs through April, riding the dry months and the calmer sea. Calls thin out over the summer and build again from autumn, with the heaviest clustering around the Lunar New Year window.
Which port do cruise ships use in Da Nang?
Cảng Tiên Sa, on the Sơn Trà peninsula about 10 km from the centre of Đà Nẵng. It is a natural deep-water berth with roughly 965 m of quay and a maximum depth near 12 m, rated for passenger ships up to about 75,000 GRT.
How far is Hoi An from Da Nang cruise port?
About 40 km by road from Tiên Sa to the Old Town, which is 55 to 65 minutes in ordinary traffic using the coastal corridor. Budget two hours of driving for the round trip before you plan anything else.
Can you visit Hoi An on a cruise stop in Da Nang?
Comfortably, yes. On a typical eight-hour call the two-hour round trip still leaves roughly five hours, which is enough for the Old Town at a walking pace plus one stop on the way, usually the Marble Mountains.
Can you get to Hoi An from Chan May port in Hue?
It is possible but tight. Chân Mây sits about 95 to 100 km from Hội An, two hours or a little more each way through the Hải Vân tunnel. From that berth Huế is the natural choice at about an hour each way.
Can you do Ba Na Hills and Hoi An in one cruise day?
No. Bà Nà with the cable car and the Golden Bridge needs five to six hours on its own before you add the drive. On a single call it is Bà Nà or Hội An, not both.
Can a private driver pick you up at Tien Sa port?
Yes, at the designated pickup area rather than on the quay itself — Tiên Sa is a working commercial port. On larger calls the ship runs a shuttle from the gangway to the gate, so plan on meeting the car there.
Is October a risky month for a Da Nang cruise call?
The sea is calm enough for the season to open, but October and November are Hội An's flood-risk weeks. The coastal road normally keeps running; what changes is which lane the car can reach, so the last few hundred metres get decided on the morning.
