Da Nang Airport Departures 2026: What Time You Actually Have to Leave Hoi An

Thirty kilometres, forty-five minutes, and a terminal running seven and a half million passengers through a building built for six. Departure times from Hội An by flight hour, when check-in really closes, which terminal you want, and the two windows of the day that cost you an extra half hour.

Arrivals forgive you. Departures do not. If a flight lands late we wait, and the day simply starts later — but the last morning of a Hội An trip has one appointment nobody can move, and it is the only drive we make where being early is the entire skill. The distance has not changed: about 30 km, about 45 minutes. What has changed is the building at the other end.

What time do you have to leave Hội An for your flight?

Work backwards from the counter, not the gate. These are the times we actually give, measured from the Old Town ring:

Your flight Leave Hội An Why
Domestic, before 8am 3h 30m before Empty road, 40 minutes, but T1 fills early
Domestic, midday or afternoon 2h 30m before 2h 45m if it crosses 7–8am or 5–6:30pm
International, early morning 3h 15m before The road before 6am is the fastest of the day
International, 10am–2pm 4h before The midday bunch — the busiest hours in T2
International, after 8pm 4h before Leave after 6:30pm, not into the evening peak

Three of those numbers deserve explaining, because guests reliably argue with them at the door.

Add ten minutes at the Hội An end. The protected core is closed to cars at every hour of every day. Every departure from inside the heritage grid begins with a walk to the ring, with bags, in the dark if it is a dawn flight. Agree the pickup point the night before. Nobody negotiates a meeting place well at 04:00.

Subtract five if you are staying out of town. An Bàng and the Cẩm An hotels sit a few kilometres closer to the airport than the Old Town does; Cửa Đại sits a few further. Enough to change the alarm, not the plan.

Then leave the buffer alone. It is not padding — it is the specific fifteen minutes a wet October morning, a school run, or a queue at the kerb takes from you without asking.

Why isn't the driving time the whole answer?

Because Đà Nẵng's airport is running well over the size of its buildings, and the city has said so in writing.

The airport handles 130 to 170 flights a day, of which 60 to 70 are international. In 2025, T1 carried 7.5 million passengers against a design capacity of 6 million, and T2 carried 6.8 million against 4 million. In the first four months of 2026 the city counted over 1.6 million international arrivals, up 35 percent on the same period the year before. Over New Year alone, close to 3,600 flights moved through.

The city's own assessment of what that does is unusually blunt for an official document: because of time zones and tour scheduling, international flights concentrate at midday and in the evening, and the check-in, immigration and screening areas overload together. The response on the table includes redeploying immigration officers to peak hours, expanding the automated Autogate border-control lanes, opening more customs counters, and — the part that concerns your driver — upgrading the roads and forecourt in front of the terminal, which congest at exactly the same hours.

So the honest version of the timing question is not "how long is the drive". It is "does my flight sit inside the bunch". If it does, an hour of extra margin is the cheapest insurance on the whole trip.

When does check-in actually close?

Earlier than most people assume, and it is the airline's rule rather than the airport's.

As a working shape: counters close 40 minutes before a domestic departure and 50 minutes before an international one, opening 2 hours ahead for domestic flights and 3 hours ahead for international.

Two consequences. The number that ends your trip is the counter time, not the boarding time — an international flight at 13:40 stops accepting bags at 12:50. And if bags are waiting on a tailor, that final fitting has to finish the previous evening. We have driven the other version of that morning. It is not a good drive.

Which terminal, and where does the car stop?

T1 is domestic. T2 is international. They sit next to each other on the same access road, a couple of minutes apart, and the choice has to be made before we leave Hội An rather than at the barrier — the forecourt is not a place to change your mind at peak hour. If your itinerary starts with a hop to Hà Nội or Hồ Chí Minh City before a long-haul connection, you want T1, whatever your final destination is.

T2 has held a five-star Skytrax rating for three consecutive years, 2024 to 2026, which tells you the service is good and says nothing at all about the queue at 22:00.

The drop-off is a working kerb, not a lay-by: a driver pulls in, bags come out, the car moves. That is the deal at every terminal in the country, and it is enforced more tightly here as volumes climb.

Which road do we take at five in the morning?

The coastal one, almost always: Lạc Long Quân and Trường Sa north behind the dune line onto Võ Nguyên Giáp, then west across the river. Four lanes, no heavy freight in the daytime window, and a straight run at the terminal from the beach side.

Before 06:00 it is the fastest road in the region and the drive is closer to 40 minutes than 45. Between 07:00 and 08:00, and again from 17:00 to 18:30, school and factory traffic thickens along the whole corridor and the same distance costs an hour. The inland ĐT607 through Điện Ngọc is ten minutes slower on a dry day and the better choice on a wet one, because it drains.

That call belongs to your driver, made from the weather at 04:30 rather than the plan from last week. The early alarm is what buys them the freedom to make it.

What does the wet season do to the last morning?

From October into November the Thu Bồn does what it has always done, and the airport run keeps working long after the Old Town lanes are under water. The airport sits high and so does the coastal road; what floods is the low ground between them and the approaches to some hotels.

The rule for those two months is add thirty minutes, not fifteen, and take the call the night before rather than the morning of. It rarely comes to a diverted pickup. It costs nothing to have planned for one.

What about a late flight and a midday checkout?

The most common awkward shape of a Hội An departure, and worth solving rather than enduring. Bags go in the car at checkout and the afternoon becomes the drive. Marble Mountains — Ngũ Hành Sơn — sits almost exactly on the coastal route north, takes about 90 minutes with the lift, and leaves you 10 minutes from the terminal. The Đà Nẵng beachfront and the Chàm sculpture museum are in the same corridor, and a late seafood dinner near Mỹ Khê ends a quarter of an hour from check-in. The alternative — a lobby, four hours, a taxi at eight — is the same money and none of the day.

Is any of this about to get better?

Yes, and not this year.

The T2 international terminal expansion is approved at close to 1,500 billion VND, scheduled across 2026 to 2030, and will lift T2's design capacity to 6 million passengers a year. The bigger piece is T1: under Quyết định 3324/QĐ-UBND of 29 July 2026, Đà Nẵng approved an adjusted investment of more than 11,282 billion VND for ACV to rebuild and expand the domestic terminal. Construction is expected to start in August 2027, the new section to open in January 2029 and the renovation of the existing building to finish in August 2029. T1 then reaches about 14 million passengers a year, and the airport as a whole roughly 20 million.

Which means every flight you take out of Đà Nẵng between now and 2029 leaves from a building carrying more people than it was drawn for. Plan the morning accordingly, and the airport is a pleasant one. Cut it fine, and it is the only stressful hour of an otherwise gentle fortnight.

good questions

How early should you leave Hoi An for Da Nang airport?
For an international flight, 3 hours 15 minutes before departure at a quiet hour, and a full 4 hours if you are leaving in the midday or late-evening bunch when the international terminal is busiest. For a domestic flight, 2 hours 30 minutes, or 2 hours 45 if it crosses a rush hour. The drive itself is only about 45 minutes of that.
How long does it take to drive from Hoi An to Da Nang airport?
About 30 km and 45 minutes from the Old Town ring on a clear road. Before 6am it can be 40. Between 7 and 8 in the morning or 5 and 6:30 in the evening, budget an hour. Heavy rain in October and November adds another fifteen minutes on top.
What time does check-in close at Da Nang airport?
By airline rule, not airport rule. Counters typically close 40 minutes before a domestic departure and 50 minutes before an international one, with check-in opening 2 hours ahead for domestic and 3 hours ahead for international flights. Treat the counter, not the gate, as your deadline.
Which terminal do I need at Da Nang, T1 or T2?
T1 is the domestic terminal, T2 is international. They are adjacent buildings on the same access road, and your driver needs to know which one before you leave Hội An, not at the barrier. If your journey starts with a domestic hop to Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, you want T1 even if your final destination is abroad.
Is Da Nang airport crowded in 2026?
Yes, and the city says so itself. The airport runs 130 to 170 flights a day, 60 to 70 of them international. In 2025 T1 handled 7.5 million passengers against a 6 million design capacity and T2 handled 6.8 million against 4 million. Both expansions are approved but neither opens this year.
What is the worst time of day to fly out of Da Nang?
The midday block and the late evening, when international departures bunch up and the check-in, immigration and screening halls all fill at once. The kerb outside the terminal congests at the same hours. Those flights are the ones worth leaving Hội An four hours ahead for.
Can a car pick you up inside Hoi An Old Town for an airport run?
No. The protected core is closed to cars at every hour of every day, so a departure starts with a short walk to the ring road with your bags. Add ten minutes to any plan that begins inside the heritage grid, and agree the exact pickup point the night before rather than at 4am.
What if my flight leaves late at night and checkout is at noon?
Use the afternoon rather than sitting on it. Marble Mountains sits almost exactly on the route north and takes about 90 minutes, and Đà Nẵng's beachfront is 10 minutes from the terminal. Bags stay in the car, and you arrive at the airport having spent the day somewhere better than a lobby.
