Asia Park Da Nang 2026: The Sun Wheel Stopped Turning, and What the Riverfront Does Instead
Công viên châu Á — Asia Park, latterly Đà Nẵng Downtown — stopped taking visitors on 3 September 2025, and the 115-metre Vòng quay Mặt Trời stopped with it. Half the internet still sells tickets. What is actually on that block now, what a Đà Nẵng evening looks like without the wheel, and how the drive from Hội An changes.

For eleven years the first thing you saw coming north over cầu Tiên Sơn after dark was a wheel of light on the west bank, turning slowly over the Hàn. Guests asked for it by name. We drove people to its gate most weeks. It has not turned since 3 September 2025, and we still get asked to take families there — because the booking sites, the hotel leaflets and the top of the search results have not caught up. This is the correction, from the car.
Is Asia Park still open in 2026?
No. On 5 August 2025, Công ty TNHH Công viên châu Á — the Sun Group company that ran the site — announced that the park, by then rebranded Đà Nẵng Downtown, would stop receiving visitors from 3 September 2025. Tuổi Trẻ, VnExpress, Thanh Niên and the city's own broadcaster all carried it. Some outlets wrote "tạm dừng" (temporarily suspended), others "đóng cửa" (closed); it was one decision either way.
The Vòng quay Mặt Trời — the Sun Wheel — stopped with it, as did the outdoor thrill rides. In the reporting we have seen there has been no announcement of a reopening in the old format. So the practical answer for anyone planning an evening in Đà Nẵng in late 2026 is: there is no park to enter and no wheel to ride, whatever the ticket resellers still have listed.
Why did it close?
Not for repairs. The land is the first phase of a far bigger scheme: "Khu thương mại dịch vụ kết hợp công viên vui chơi giải trí – Da Nang Downtown", reported at more than 79,790 billion VND across roughly 769,268 square metres — close to 77 hectares. In late July 2025 Đà Nẵng's Sở Nông nghiệp và Môi trường put the project's environmental impact assessment out for comment, with the existing Asia Park sitting inside phase one. Reporting since has described legal procedures completed and financing arranged, including a credit commitment from BIDV.
What that means for your dates: nobody should promise you a reopening. Accounts of when ground was actually broken disagree, and the developer's own material talks about first sub-zones rather than a park admitting visitors. Plan the evening without it.
What was the Sun Wheel, for the record?
Worth writing down properly, because it was a real piece of engineering and the numbers are about to become history. Per the city's own portal, the wheel opened on 18 July 2014 at Asia Park, just south of the Đài tưởng niệm 2/9: 115 metres tall, 64 cabins, up to 384 passengers at once, roughly 15 minutes for a full revolution — the fourth-largest observation wheel in the world on the day it opened.
Nothing we have read says it has been taken down, and it still reads clearly in the skyline from the bridges and from the Tiên Sơn approach. But it is closed, it is unlit on the nights we pass it, and there is no ride to buy.
Where exactly was it, and does the block affect the drive?
The address is 01 Phan Đăng Lưu, on the 2 Tháng 9 axis, west bank, at the Đỗ Pháp Thuận junction — about 10 minutes from Da Nang airport in ordinary traffic and five minutes south of the Dragon Bridge crossing.
Two road notes. First, the ward name changed under the 1 July 2025 restructure: Hòa Cường Bắc and Hòa Cường Nam were merged with Bình Thuận and Hòa Thuận Tây into a single phường Hòa Cường, part of Đà Nẵng's reorganisation into 94 commune-level units. Listings still printing Hòa Cường Bắc mean the same block. Second, if your hotel is on the 2 Tháng 9 or Phan Đăng Lưu stretch, you are staying beside a very large construction site. Expect hoarding, works traffic and a less photogenic walk out of the door than the photographs on the booking page promised.
What replaces a Sun Wheel evening?
Honestly, a better one — because it costs nothing and it runs on a timetable the river keeps.
Cầu Rồng, 21:00, Friday to Sunday. Eighteen bursts of fire in two rounds, then water in three, fifteen to twenty minutes end to end. The bridge shuts to traffic beforehand, which is the part that decides where the car can be. Extra performances get added for Tết, 30 April, 1 May and 2 September, announced shortly beforehand rather than a year ahead.
Cầu Sông Hàn, 23:00, Saturday and Sunday. The swing bridge rotates its middle span to let river traffic through, vehicles cleared from about 22:45, span back around midnight. A whole bridge turns sideways in the dark and nobody sells a ticket.
The east bank, any night. Trần Hưng Đạo, the Cá Chép Hóa Rồng statue, the Love Bridge: this is the side that gives you the dragon's head in profile with the city behind it.
Helio Center, a few hundred metres from the old gate. On đường 2/9 beside the memorial park, around 35,000 square metres of night market, food stalls and arcade, free to walk into with rides and games charged separately — still reported operating through 2026. It is the nearest like-for-like swap for a family that came for the park, and it is a two-minute drive from where the wheel stands.
A boat, if the sky is doing anything. The Hàn cruises run short loops that put both the Dragon Bridge and the Trần Thị Lý bridge on your beam.
Will the river itself look different soon?
It should. Đà Nẵng has approved phase one of "Dòng sông Ánh sáng" — the River of Light — at more than 149 billion VND, running 2025 to 2027: architectural lighting for cầu Nguyễn Văn Trỗi, cầu Tiên Sơn, cầu Thuận Phước, cầu Sông Hàn, cầu Trần Thị Lý and cầu Rồng, with laser work over the water. It is city-funded, not a ticketed attraction. Reported timelines put construction through 2026, which in practice means occasional night works and lane narrowing along the riverfront roads. Your driver will route around whichever bank is dug up on the night; it is not a reason to change plans.
How do you shape the evening from Hội An now?
Thirty kilometres, about 45 minutes to the riverfront, stretching fifteen to twenty minutes at the evening edges and across holiday weekends. The shape that works:
- Leave Hội An 18:00 for dinner in Đà Nẵng first, or 19:30 if you are coming only for the dragon.
- Stack it onto a bigger day rather than driving up for one show — Marble Mountains at 16:00, dinner at 18:30, Cầu Rồng at 21:00, home by 23:00.
- Agree the pickup corner before you get out. Both banks fill from about 20:30 on a Saturday and the bridge closure moves the kerb.
- If you want the swing bridge too, that is 23:00 and a midnight return to Hội An. Worth it once.
- Do not build the night around the wheel, and do not pay anyone who offers to.
If you want that evening driven — one car from Hội An, dinner, the dragon, and a driver who already knows which bank is closed tonight — tell us the trip at hoiandriver.com/quote. A real driver quotes it, a non-refundable 10% deposit books it, and the balance is paid at trip end in USD.
good questions
- Is Asia Park in Da Nang still open in 2026?
- No. Công ty TNHH Công viên châu Á announced on 5 August 2025 that the park — by then branded Đà Nẵng Downtown — would stop receiving visitors from 3 September 2025. The Vietnamese press reported the closure at the time, and we have seen no announcement of a reopening in the old format since. If a booking site is still selling you an Asia Park ticket, it is selling a park that is not admitting anyone.
- Can you still ride the Sun Wheel in Da Nang?
- No. Vòng quay Mặt Trời stopped operating with the rest of the park on 3 September 2025, along with the outdoor thrill rides. Nothing we have read says the structure has been dismantled, and it still reads in the skyline from the bridges, but it is closed and there is no ride to buy.
- Why did Asia Park close?
- The land is going into a much larger Sun Group development — "Khu thương mại dịch vụ kết hợp công viên vui chơi giải trí – Da Nang Downtown" — reported at more than 79,790 billion VND across roughly 769,268 square metres. Đà Nẵng's environment department consulted on the project's environmental impact assessment in late July 2025, with the existing park forming phase one.
- When will Da Nang Downtown reopen?
- No date you should plan a trip around. Reports on the groundbreaking itself disagree, and the developer's own material talks about first sub-zones rather than a park reopening. Treat it as a construction site for now and check again closer to your dates.
- Where was Asia Park, and is the area worth driving to?
- At 01 Phan Đăng Lưu on the 2 Tháng 9 axis, west bank of the Hàn, just south of the Đài tưởng niệm 2/9 memorial. The block itself is not a destination now, but Helio Center sits a few hundred metres away on đường 2/9 and was still reported operating in 2026, and the whole riverfront is a five-minute drive north.
- What should you do in Da Nang in the evening instead?
- Build the evening around the bridges. Cầu Rồng breathes fire and water at 21:00 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, about 15 to 20 minutes end to end. Cầu Sông Hàn swings its middle span at 23:00 on Saturday and Sunday. In between there is the Cá Chép Hóa Rồng statue and the Love Bridge on the east bank, a Hàn River cruise, and the night market at Helio.
- How long is the drive from Hoi An to the Han River riverfront?
- About 30 km and 45 minutes in ordinary conditions, stretching by fifteen to twenty minutes at the evening edges and on holiday weekends. Da Nang airport to that part of the west bank is roughly 10 minutes.
- Has the address changed since the 2025 ward merger?
- The street address has not, but the ward has. From 1 July 2025 Hòa Cường Bắc and Hòa Cường Nam were merged with Bình Thuận and Hòa Thuận Tây into a single phường Hòa Cường, part of Đà Nẵng's restructure into 94 commune-level units. Older listings printing Hòa Cường Bắc point at the same block.
